Profile

Origin

Varuna is a god of the skies and seas in the Vedas; as Hinduism developed in the post-Vedic era, Varuna's importance declined. He has a close association with the god Mitra.

In Buddhism, Varuna is one of the devas and is believed in the Mahayana tradition to be a protector of the dharma.
