Yamaoka is a character in the Persona series who first appears as Kei Nanjo's butler, and later becomes his ultimate Persona in Megami Ibunroku Persona and Persona 2: Eternal Punishment.

Megami Ibunroku Persona

Yamaoka is first encountered by the protagonist, Masao Inaba and Yukino Mayuzumi at the entrance of St. Hermelin High School, where he came to pick up Kei Nanjo. He rejoices at the sight of his master surrounded by friends, but Nanjo, embarassed by the butler calling him "Master Kei", tells him that he and the party are heading to Mikage Hospital and do not need a ride. Before leaving the school grounds, Nanjo tells Yamaoka to not follow him. Worried for Nanjo's condition, he follows the party to the hospital. He can be seen in the 1F lobby, spying on his master behind a vending machine. If the protagonist speaks to him, he will ask to not mention his presence to his master.

Following Maki Sonomura being rushed to the ICU and an earthquake, the hospital's layout becomes distorted and demons start appearing. A nurse is attacked by a group of Mr. Zombie and a Zombie Nurse on the 2F lobby. Yamaoka comes to her rescue, but is mortally wounded by the demons. The party arrives at the lobby after hearing the nurse's scream. Nanjo notices Yamaoka laying on the floor, and enters a fit of rage. A battle occurs, and the four characters awaken to their Persona. Following the battle, Nanjo begs Yamaoka to stay alive, but it is too late for him. He makes Nanjo hold a promise: to become the No. 1 man in Japan, and afterward passes away, telling his master he will always be in his heart.

Yamaoka reappears towards the end of the game as the Ultimate Persona of Kei Nanjo. The Totem required to fuse him, the Amber Glasses, can be obtained in both routes of the story:

• In the SEBEC Route, inside Alaya Cavern's B8F room, the protagonist will meet his other self. If enough right choices were made throughout the story, the Amber Glasses will be obtained alongside other totems.
• In the Snow Queen Route, inside the Ice Castle's 3F, the party will meet Hee Ho. He will give a totem to fuse a party member's Ultimate Persona in exchange for Ambrosia. If Nanjo was recruited and the protagonist gives him an Ambrosia, the Amber Glasses will be obtainned.

If a Persona of the Judgement Arcana is fused and the Amber Glasses are added, the resulting Persona will be Yamaoka.

Trivia

• According to Kazuma Kaneko, despite Yamaoka being a separate person from Kei Nanjo, Yamaoka could become his Persona due to their strong connection creating a Yamaoka-like alternate personality within Nanjo. Yamaoka's soul fused with this alternate personality at the time of his death.
