Profile
Origin
- Main section: Dionysus § Origin
Bacchus[a] is an epithet of the Greek god Dionysus related to the state of mania expressed in the Dionysian cult.[1] Along with its frequent usage in Greek, the name Bacchus is used for Dionysus in Latin-language literature as well. In addition to the name Bacchus, Dionysus is also commonly called in Latin by the name Liber, the name of a native Roman deity with whom Dionysus was popularly identified; note, however, that Cicero distinguishes the Roman Liber (Liber son of Ceres) from the Greek-derived Dionysus/Bacchus (Liber son of Semele) in his De natura deorum.[2]
While the name Bacchus is of Greek origin and the name was used by both Greeks and Romans, the Bacchus of the Persona series is called Roman in official profiles, with Persona World Guidance explicitly stating Bacchus is the Roman equivalent to the Greek Dionysus.[3]
