Profile

Origin

Brigid, or Brigit,[a] is a figure in medieval Irish folklore, and she was presumably a deity in the pre-Christian religion of Ireland. She is a member of the Tuath Dé (lit. "people of God"), a group of supernatural beings said to have lived in Ireland before the arrival of the Milesians (the supposed ancestors of the Irish). Brigid is the sole daughter of the Dagda, and she is associated with smithing, the hearth, poetry, and healing. Her name means "exalted" in Old and Middle Irish.

The cult of Saint Brigid of Kildare has been proposed to have absorbed aspects of the cult of the pre-Christian deity Brigid, though this remains speculation.

A goddess named Brigantia is attested in Romano-British inscriptions; this name is linguistically cognate to the name of Brigid. This root is also attested in continental Celtic place names.

Design

Brigid wears an iron gauntlet on her right hand in order to protect her hand from burns; Kaneko compares this to wearing rubber gloves while doing the dishes.[1]

Her helmet and pot have symbols resembling Germanic runes and/or Phoenician script (despite these never being used for Irish), though they do not appear to form any actual words.
