Anubis is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Roman statue of Hermanubis (c. 1st-2nd century AD)

Origin

Anubis[a] is the Egyptian god of death and embalming. He is the son of Set and Nephthys, though some historical records depict Osiris as his father with Set's murder of Osiris being a revenge for his tryst with Nephthys. He is depicted as either a jackal or a man with the head of a jackal wearing an Egyptian kilt and ceremonial clothing. He plays roles in all aspects of the dead, overseeing the embalming and proper burial, protecting the tombs of the dead, guiding souls through Duat and ultimately weighing the hearts of the dead against the feather of Maat. Those that have hearts lighter than the feather being welcomed by Osiris into the afterlife, however any hearts heavier than the feather are instead fed to Ammut, erasing them from existence.

Anubis was generally identified with Hermes Psychopompus in the Hellenistic period, with the resulting syncretized deity being called Hermanubis.[b]

Design

Anubis's Shin Megami Tensei II holds a kērykeion (caduceus) staff like Greco-Roman depictions of Hermanubis.
