Profile

Origin

Set,[a] also known as Seth[b] is a god of disorder, violence, and foreign lands in ancient Egyptian religion. He is the lord of the Deshret[c] or Red Land, the desert which surrounds Egypt on two sides. He acts as a balance to Horus, who is the lord of the Kemet[d] or Black Land, the fertile soil of Egypt on the Nile Delta.[citation needed] Initially worshiped as one of the primary gods of the Ennead, Set was demonized for his status as the god foreigners after Egypt suffered a variety of invasions and attacks from other nations. As a result his negative aspects were emphasised and worship of him fell dramatically. The animal Set is associated with, referred to as the Set Animal or Sha, is a mystery to historians, with it being debated to be an ant eater, a donkey, a variety of jackals or foxes, and more.

Set is the brother of Osiris and Isis. He usurped his brother by building a sarcophagus that fit Osiris perfectly then declaring at a banquet that whoever fit inside would receive it as a gift. The guests failed to fit until Osiris stepped inside, with Set immediately slamming it shut and trapping his brother inside before throwing it into the Nile, and when it is found he tears Osiris' body apart and scatters it so they cannot be recovered. Eventually Isis recovers her husband's scattered remains, allowing him to become king of the dead. He is also depicted as a loyal servant of Ra, aiding the sun god in his ceaseless battle against Apep.

Following myths detail his battles with Horus as they vied for the right to rule, with the Ennead overseeing these various challenges between them, the conflict continuing for 80 years despite Horus' repeated victories due to the judge overseeing their contests holding favour towards Set. In one battle Set gouged out Horus' left eyes, requiring it to be replaced by one created by a moon deity, either Thoth or Khonsu, while Horus castrated Set, with his infertility being the reason that the desert he ruled could not support life. In early myths their rivalry ends when Egypt is divided between them, with Set claiming the desert and Horus claiming the fertile lands of the Nile, however after his demonization myths shift to Set losing in totality and Horus becoming the king of all of Egypt.

Design

Seth's design seems to take elements from Apep rather than from depictions of Set in mythology. In Shin Megami Tensei II he is depicted as a black dragon covered in spikes with bat like wings.
