Jack Frost is a personification of ice and all cold things, he is said to be responsible for cold weather, frostbite on the extremities of humans, and leaving distinctive fern-like patterns of frost on windows. In modern media, he is often depicted as playful and mischievous by nature. Jack Frost is said to have originated from Anglo-Saxon and Norse folktales, however his first appearance in any surviving literature is in 1734's 'Round About Our Coal Fire, or Christmas Entertainments'.
Design
In Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei II, Jack Frost appears as a snowman with arms and legs, with a red hat, pure black eyes, white and blue scarf, red boats, and a red umbrellas with white polka dots. his design is potentially based off modern depictions of Frosty the Snow Man, a character from the song of the same name. The song mentions that he wears a hat, and has eyes made of coal, and a large number of modern depictions also feature him wearing a scarf. however there is also some inaccuracies with this theory as Frosty the Snow Man's original song mentions him having a corncob pipe, button nose, and holding a broomstick, all features missing from his design, as such he may have instead just have been inspired by a regular snowman.
In Shin Megami Tensei, Jack Frost received a complete redesign, appearing again as a pure white, chubby snowman like creature, with arms and legs, but now appearing to wear a blue cap, with long bent horns sticking out of the back half of the top, a simplistic yellow smiley face on the front, and areas that would cover where ears would normally go. He also wears a blue collar with yellow pom-poms on it, reminiscent to that of a jesters, and loosely fitting blue boots with a yellow trim on top. His face is made of simplistic pure black shapes for his eyes and mouth, 2 small white teeth on the top of his mouth, and he is without a nose. he also has 4 fingers on each hand, and a small tail that is the same colour as his body.
In Jack Bros., Jack Frost's design was changed to a far more child like form, with a much larger head and mouth with a pinkish tongue inside it, and large hands and feet. On his hands he now wears yellow gloves and his boots are pure yellow instead of their normal blue with yellow accents.
For Shin Megami Tensei Devil Children Card Game he was lightly redesigned, removing the small pom-poms from his collar, and making his boots more form fitting. these changes would also remain in his Persona 5: The Phantom X design, although with a slightly smaller collar in that design, and slightly less form fitting boots.
For Shin Megami Tensei V, Jack Frost was given a slight redesign by Masayuki Doi. His proportions and facial features were given slight adjustments, while a white outline was added to the edges of his cap and collar. The yellow collar lining of his boots was also modified slightly. Acccording to Doi, updating Jack Frost's design without compromising his original look proved to be challenging.[1]
