The Embryon are one of the six tribes of the Junkyard, led by the protagonist, Serph, operating from Muladhara. After the events in Coordinate 136, they establish a secondary base simply named Embryon Base 2.
Aside from the custom uniforms worn by the playable characters, the Embryon adhere to a simple uniform consisting of a black bodysuit under a gray suit covering the torso, pelvis, limbs and neck with articulations for mobility. All uniforms contain an orange accent, which symbolizes "victory".

Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner
The Embryon tribe is initially one of the smaller tribes in the Junkyard, only seen competing with the Vanguards. After the Atma virus infects the Junkyard's inhabitants, they gain possession of Sera and use their Atma's power to kill Harley and conquer the Vanguards. Later, they ally themselves with the Maribel against their rival, the Solids, but are forced to kill Jinana, who had succumbed to her hunger, conquering the Maribel.
Muladhara is invaded by the Solids to capture Sera, where she is held hostage at Coordinate 136. The Embryon chase their leader, Mick the Slug, to the top of the building there and are ultimately able to recover Sera and kill Mick, conquering the Solids. To avoid Sera being captured again, they establish Embryon Base 2 to hide her, then lay a trap for Bat at the Deserted Ship, killing him and destroying the ship.
Lupa of the Wolves, after being defeated by Varin Omega's Hunger Wave, seeks an alliance with the Embryon to invade Ajna through the Samsara Tunnels. The Embryon accept, but Lupa also falls victim to Hunger Wave, forcing the Embryon to kill him in self-defense, conquering the Wolves. They then invade Ajna and kill Varin, conquering the Brutes. As the sole remaining tribe in the Junkyard, they win the war, opening the way to Nirvana.

After exiting the Junkyard, the remaining Embryon appear in the real world with physical bodies. Initially separated, Serph, Argilla and Gale fight through the Occupied Sector and reach the Underground City. There, they discover the Lokapala took Cielo hostage in order to coerce the Embryon into retrieving Sera for them, but pressure from Gale and Fred forces Roland to release Cielo and join the Embryon in attacking the Internment Facility.
After Serph's supposed death, Gale takes over his role as leader of the Embryon. Then, once Sera awakens to her Atma, she is given the role of leader by Gale until Serph returns to the Embryon. Finally, once the Embryon ascend to the Sun, Serph and Sera fuse into Seraph, taking over as the leader.
Nomenclature
The word "embryon" is an archaic form of the word "embryo", meaning an unborn or unhatched offspring in the process of development. It often specifically refers to a human offspring during the period from approximately the second to the eighth week after fertilization. More abstractly, it can refer to something at a rudimentary stage that shows potential for development, evoking some of the game's core themes.
