Origin

Zhong Kui is a Daoist deity, sometimes called the "King of Ghosts" for his ability to vanquish evil spirits. He is usually described as wearing a broken hat, blue robe, and horn belt.

Within tradition, Zhong Kui is said to have been an unsightly but extremely talented individual, but had a beautiful sister. He passed the imperial exam, but had it forcibly stripped from him by the emperor, causing him to commit suicide by smashing his head against the palace gates. His virtuous friend and fellow traveller, Du Ping, buried his corpse. Within the realm of the dead, Zhong Kui garnered praise from the Jade Emperor for his exploits in exorcising evil spirits from the mortal realm, as well as his integrity, thus the title "King of Ghosts." Zhong Kui eventually stepped down from the realm of the dead to marry out his sister to Du Ping.

In the Song dynasty text Brush Talks from Dream Brook, it is said that Emperor Ming of Tang dreamt of Zhong Kui. In said dream, a small ghost had stolen a purse from consort Yang Guifei. Thereafter, a larger ghost with big eyes, introducing himself as Zhong Kui, ate the thief, before telling Ming his name. He sought to rid the empire of evil. Ming, waking up, commissioned Wu Daozi to produce a painting of Zhong Kui and hang it up to scare away any evil spirits. This then became a common practice amongst the people, especially during the Dragon Boat Festival.
