Origin

Scylla is a monster from Greek mythology notable for her role in Homer's Odyssey, described as having the upper body of a woman and lower body of a dragon with six dog like forms coming from her waist. During his travels back to Ithaca, Odysseus much travel through a narrow channel of water, on one side cliffs where Scylla resides and on the other are waters where Charybdis resides, and must choose which one he should risk being closer to. This choice is believed to be the origin of the phrase "between a rock and a hard place". As he sails through, Odysseus follows the advice of the sorceress Circe and keeps closer to the cliffs of Scylla, resulting in six of his crew to be devoured by her before his ship is able to escape from the two monsters.

Scylla's origins are largely contradictory. In Greek literature it is said she was the monstrous daughter of Crataeis, however other accounts name Hecate as her mother, with her father possibly being the Titan Phorcys or the god Triton. Roman works of the poets Virgil and Ovid state that she was once a beautiful woman who was transformed into a monster, with Virgil's Aeneid claiming she was a nymph and lover of Poseidon that was transformed by his consort Amphitrite out of jealousy, while Ovid's Metamorphoses claims she was a human who was desired by the god Glaucus who turned to Circe to help him win Scylla, only for Circe to grow jealous of Glaucus' affection towards Scylla and transform her into a monster. Both accounts have Scylla transformed by a potion poured into the waters from which Scylla was bathing. Another alternative comes from Hyginus' Fabulae, which claims that she was the offspring of Echidna and Typhon.
