Origin

Kanbari Nyudo is a Japanese deity associated with toilets and lavatories. According to folklore, reciting "Kanbari Nyudo hototogisu" on New Year's Eve wards off misfortune and spirits connected to toilets for the following year. The legend is believed to have originated from fears surrounding old Japanese toilets, which were often simple and hazardous.
