Hel is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.
Profile
Origin
Hel is the daughter of Loki and Angrboda and sister of Fenrir and Jormungandr. She is depicted as a maiden with half of her body that of a normal woman, while the other half is skeletal or corpse-like. She rules over Helheim, also referred to as Hel, where those that have died but were not selected by the Valkyries to enter Valhalla reside. She presides over her realm after she was anointed to the position by Odin, with some accounts claiming it was banishment.[citation needed] When Baldur was killed, his brother Hermod rode to Hel and begged her to allow him to return to life. Hel stated that should all of existence weep for Baldur's death then she would allow him to be revived, however the female Jötunn Þökk refused and Baldur remained in the realm of the dead. According to Snorri Sturluson's Gylfaginning, the jötunn was Loki in disguise.[1] When Ragnarok comes all the denizens of Helheim will stand with Loki against the Æsir.
It is believed that Hel may have been a later invention brought by Christianity growing in prominence within Norse culture.[citation needed]
