Jörmungandr is the world serpent from Norse mythology. One of the three children of Loki and Angrboða, Jörmungandr and his sibling Hel and Fenrir were banished upon birth by Odin for their prophesied role in Ragnarok with Jörmungandr being thrown into the sea of Midgard where he grew to insurmountable size, becoming large enough to encircle the entire world and bite his own tail, forming an Ouroboros around Midgard.

Jörmungandr has a long rivalry with Thor, and they are prophesied to kill each other in Ragnarok, with Jörmungandr dying first before Thor succumbs to the serpents poison. Prior to this event they have multiple encounters, such as through the trickery of Utgard-Loki who challenges Thor to lift a cat off the ground which is in reality a part of Jörmungandr's immense body under an illusion. Though Thor cannot lift the cat from the ground with its body lengthening as he lifts its stomach he is able to get it to lift one paw from the ground, unknowingly displaying strength able to alter the boundaries of the universe despite being humiliated by Utgard-Loki. Another encounter had Thor fishing on the sea when Jörmungandr bit his line, prompting Thor to brandish Mjolnir to kill the serpent before his companion Hymir cuts the fishing line in fear and allows Jörmungandr to return to his rest below the ocean.
