A Tarot de Marseille Hanged Man cardA Rider-Waite-Smith Hanged Man card
In tarot, the Hanged Man is the twelfth of the 21 trump cards, which are called "Major Arcana" in esoteric usage. The imagery originates from Italian tarocchi decks. The Hanged Man typically features a man being hanged from one ankle with his other leg bent and his hands tied behind his back.
Arthur Edward Waite lists the following divinatory meanings in The Pictorial Key to the Tarot: "Wisdom, circumspection, discernment, trials, sacrifice, intuition, divination, prophecy. Reversed: Selfishness, the crowd, body politic."[1]
