Origin

Onmoraki is a bird-like spirit which originated in China, first known from a story included in the Song-dynasty work Qingzunlu.[a] The same story present in the Qingzunlu was later included in the 18th-century Japanese work Taihei Hyakumonogatari.[2][1]

From the Japanese 陰摩羅鬼/陰魔羅鬼, romanized Onmoraki, referring to a dark (陰Yin; shadow; negative on) being born of impiety (摩羅/魔羅Māra, Buddhist devil who represents impiety and the death of spiritual life mora) which manifests as a ghost (鬼ghost; ogre; demon ki). This term was borrowed from Chinese.
