Profile

Origin

Vasuki, whose name means "King of the Nagas" in Sanskrit (वासुकि Vāsuki), appears across various myths and epics in Hinduism. He is most recognized for the churning of the Ocean of Milk (Samudra Manthan), wherein the celestial devas and asuras wrapped his body around Mount Mandara, and pulled him like a churning rope to extract amrita, the nectar of eternal life. The pressure caused toxic fumes to escape Vasuki's mouths, which turned to rainclouds, so Vishnu assumed the form of a large birth to stabilize Mount Mandara and assist both groups as they continued churning amrita.[1] Halahala poison would then emerge from the ocean among many treasures, but Lord Shiva consumed it to protect the universe and all creation. Many other myths portray Vasuki as the ornament (Nagabharana) coiled around Shiva's neck, which turned blue from the poison, symbolizing his association with Shiva's role as the cosmic destroyer. As the Serpent-King, Vasuki is believed to be a guardian of Patala, the radiant plane of the netherworld, as well as the sibling of Shesha.
