Koropokkuru are a race of small people in Ainu folklore. They are considered to be folk that live under the butterbur plant, and is said to be benign and gentle. They used to live in harmony with the Ainu, but an incident caused them to avoid human contact.

アイヌ民族の伝承に現れる小人族の妖怪だが、性格は非常におとなしく臆病であると言われている。彼らは成人した状態でも、人間の赤ん坊程度の大きさしかなく、雨が降るとフキの下に10人は入っていたとも言われる。彼らは感性が鋭く知恵があり、動作が機敏で狩猟が上手だったとも言われ、かつてアイヌ人に入れ墨の技術を教えたのもこのコロポックルだったと言う。

From Ainu: コㇿポックㇽ, romanized korpokkur, composed of コㇿコニ (korkoni, "butterbur leaves") + ポㇰ (pok, "under") + クㇽ (kur, "person"). Literally means "those beneath the butterbur".
