Origin

Taowu[a] is one of the Four Perils[b] in Chinese mythology, mentioned prominently in the Classic of Mountains and Seas,[1] Zuo Zhuan's commentary of the Spring and Autumn Annals, and the Book of Gods and Strange Things. It is said to be a reckless, stubborn creature that appears with a human face. As one of the Four Perils, it stands in opposition to the Four Symbols.

In Records of the Grand Historian, Taowu is a moniker given to a son of the Zhuanxu clan, one of four failed sons of emperors; he was branded as such for his inability to take any instructions; he could not teach a lesson, he did not know how to speak. The clan, along with the other three, were expelled.[2]

Along with Qiongqi, it is used as a moral lesson in Youxue Qionglin: Taowu represents cruelty, Qiongqi represents brutality.[3]

Being one of the Four Perils, Taotie is grouped with Hundun, Qiongqi, and Taotie.
