Profile

Origin

Hua Po are Chinese flower spirits mentioned in various Chinese folk tales. One story of Hua Po is told in the final story of What the Master Would Not Discuss by Qing dynasty author Yuan Mei, who had collected various folk tales. The book itself was derided for its tongue-in-cheek insult of Confucius's avoidance of discussing the paranormal, thus leading to a name change following blasphemy allegations. In the story of Hua Po, the scholar Xie Mou, studying in Wenyuan county, came across a woman 5 cun tall. Her naked body revealed a skin as white as pure jade, with a quiet, parrot-like voice. He would put her in a cage and feed her rice. After three days, Hong Xiaolian came and saw her, shriveled up from sun exposure and dehydration, where he revealed she was a Hua Po. He claimed Hua Po are created when three or more people commit suicide from the same tree by hanging and their regret coalesce into a single being. She was given water, reviving her, before she was placed in a tree; almost immediately, a monstrous bird took her away.

Design

Hua Po's Compendium entries closely resemble the story from What the Master Would Not Discuss, but her appearance more closely resembles that of a western pixie. However, the white uniform could reference the white skin of the original. Her skin is red since Pixie's skin is already white.
