A humanoid demon with supernatural powers that lives in the mountains. The widespread popular image has a red face with a long nose and the clothing of a yamabushi. It is known to possess mysterious powers called jintsūriki, such as the art of illusion, psychokinesis, and the art of flight. If a Buddhist monk training in the mountains makes an error in his path and falls into a heretical path, he is said to become a tengu. A monk with an evil heart would become an evil tengu who acted as a demon hindering the ascetic training of monks. |

Nomenclature
天狗 tengu literally means "heavenly dog", despite its appearance resembling a bird–human hybrid. The term is likely borrowed from Chinese 天狗 tiāngǒu, which is a dog creature in Chinese folklore.
