Alaya Cavern is only accessed after retrieving Maki from the inner area of Lost Forest. In order to enter the dungeon, the party must head to Alaya Shrine, and accept to leave only the protagonist and Maki in the party. Doing so will move the rock behind the shrine, revealing the dungeon.

In the 8F Inner Room, in the south-east section of the floor, the party will meet the protagonist's other self. Depending on the answers given at several points in the story, the party will receive totems to fuse Personas exclusive to the party members.
