Parvati is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

Parvati is a Hindu goddess, she is the daughter of Himavat (personification of the Himalayan mountains) and she is the consort of Shiva. In addition, she is the mother to the gods Ganesha and Kartikeya. The goddesses Kali and Durga are manifestations of Parvati, both being created to slay the demon Mahishasura^[1]. In her past life as a human, Parvati was born as Sati, who also married Shiva. However, Sati's father, Daksha, disapproved of the marriage and upon insulting Shiva during a sacred ritual Sati immolated herself to be reborn^[2]. As Parvati, she took on many years of meditation and renounced her status as a princess to gain Shiva's love, though he remained distant due to the loss of Sati. The gods attempted to bring the two together, using Kama to shoot his arrow of love. Shiva, however, unleashed his third eye and burned Kama to ashes, necessitating Parvati to continue her austerities^[3]. By the end, Shiva opened his heart to her again after testing her devotion and the two were wedded.

As the material balance to Shiva's asceticism, Parvati exists as a symbol of the divine feminine, Shakti. This is thus emphasized in the fusion spell Ardhanari and special fusion Ardha.

Design

Beginning in Shin Megami Tensei II, Parvati is portrayed as a beautiful woman with light skin and pink hair, pink lotuses rest on her ears and she wears a tiara. Her midriff is exposed as she wears a lehenga and has a veil over her head. Later, in more modern designs, Parvati wears golden anklets and an orange colored pants in contrast to a pink skirt. In all appearances, Parvati holds a pink lotus in her hand.

In the Sun, there is a rare chance to encounter Parvati. At the start of the first time she is encountered, Parvati challenges the party to prove that they are worthy of seeing her husband by taking a spear from her, the Pinaka. She has a rare chance to drop it, and if she does, the party will be able to fight Shiva on the Sun's 6th layer.
