"Ardhanari" is a shortening from the Sanskrit अर्धनारीश्वर ardhanārīśvara, which is a compound of अर्ध ardha ("half"), नारी nārī ("woman"), and ईश्वर īśvara ("lord"), and refers to dual depictions of Shiva and Parvati as one being (see Ardha).
