Place of origin: Europe
The Mandrake is a valuable remedy effective against all kinds of illnesses, but it is incredibly difficult to obtain. This is because a Mandrake emits a tremendous scream when it is pulled out of the ground, killing people. Therefore, some scheming was necessary in order to harvest it. What people thought up was a method wherein they tie a rope to the base of the root and have a dog pull it out by the other end, and although the dog would end up being sacrificed, this was considered the best option.

Nomenclature

Ultimately from Greek: μανδραγόρας, romanized mandragóras, possibly from a Old Persian term meaning "human plant".

The Chinese translation uses a mistaken phonetic matching, originating from the Studium Biblicum Version of the Christian Bible. The correct term for mandrake is Simplified Chinese: 风茄, Traditional Chinese: 風茄, romanized fēngjiā (lit. "love nightshade", due to its use as an infertility treatment in Genesis) or Simplified Chinese: 曼德拉草, Traditional Chinese: 曼德拉草, romanized màndélā-cǎo (lit. "mandra herb").
