According to official profiles, Alraune is based on a piece of German folklore (mistakenly labeled Norse in localizations) about the mandrake plant, which was believed to grow where a hanged man's semen hit the ground. This legend was mentioned by English botanist William Turner, who wrote that he heard it from a doctor in Cologne. German author Hanns Heinz Ewers wrote a novel inspired by this titled Alraune (which means "mandrake"), which is alluded to in some official profiles.

Additionally, in the Low German form Alrune (masculine Alrun), the mandrake was a type of kobold in Lower Saxon folklore.

The name originally comes from an old German word meaning "to lead to a secret". It is said that, if blood falls to the earth when a man who has repeatedly stolen is hanged, from there an Alraune is born. Alraune was said to have the mysterious power to grant good luck to its owner, so people sought it out. Alraune was also a subject in German Romantic literature, where it can be seen in a different form.

When uprooted, it is said to let out a death-inducing scream. Place of origin: Germany Also known as mandragora or mandrake, it is said to be born from the tears of an innocent convict which fall below the gallows, or from semen excreted by the bodies of convicts. It is a plant with purple funeral bell-shaped flowers and orange fruit, and its roots are described as being shaped like a human. It is known to release a scream that causes death when it is uprooted and its fruit is considered a narcotic and soporific which could be made into a miracle drug that cures all illnesses, thus it is said many humans have risked their lives to obtain it since ancient times.
Kaneko Kazuma Dennō Akuma Zukan	ドイツの民間伝承に登場する、幻花の精。処刑台の側に咲き、処刑された男の血を吸って育つ。この花を部屋に置いて眠ると、毎夜美しい女がベッドにやってきては、男の精を吸っていくといわれる。 Translation: An illusive flower spirit which appears in German folklore. It blooms near gallows, growing by soaking up the blood of executed men. It is said that if one sleeps with this flower in their room, every night a beautiful woman will appear at their bed and suck out their semen.
