Origin
According to official profiles, Alraune is based on a piece of German folklore (mistakenly labeled Norse in localizations) about the mandrake plant, which was believed to grow where a hanged man's semen hit the ground. This legend was mentioned by English botanist William Turner, who wrote that he heard it from a doctor in Cologne.[1] German author Hanns Heinz Ewers wrote a novel inspired by this titled Alraune (which means "mandrake"), which is alluded to in some official profiles.

The name originally comes from an old German word meaning "to lead to a secret". It is said that, if blood falls to the earth when a man who has repeatedly stolen is hanged, from there an Alraune is born. Alraune was said to have the mysterious power to grant good luck to its owner, so people sought it out.
