Profile
Origin
A griffin[a] is a creature in ancient Greek folklore said to have the head, wings, and forelegs of an eagle and the body, tail, and hind legs of a lion. Similar creatures could be found in the iconography of ancient Mesopotamia, Iran, and Egypt.
The griffin was a popular iconographic element as far back as Mycenaean Greece, and the name of the phoenix may have originally referred to the griffin in the Mycenaean period. The griffin would later disappear from Greece before reappearing under its present name, likely reimported from the Near East.[1]
