Cerberus is a demon in the Digital Devil Saga series. It is the Atma Avatar of Lupa.

Design

According to Kazuma Kaneko, he thought it would be interesting in Cerberus's three heads could combine into three, so he devised the character's combat mode to implement this feature.

Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner

Cerberus is the boss of the Samsara Tunnels connecting Svadhisthana to Ajna. Each of his heads behave as an individual unit, and all three must be defeated. If all heads are alive, Cerberus will use Pyriphlegethon, but if only one is dead, he will use the weaker Phlegethon instead. If only the middle head is alive, he will begin using Psycho Rage.

Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner

Lupa is first seen transforming into Cerberus as he scouts the Samsara Tunnels ahead of the Embryon. Initially, several Brutes bodies can be seen throughout the Tunnels, having been cleanly killed or incapacitated by Cerberus, which earns Gale's respect. Later, the bodies become increasingly mutilated as Cerberus falls victim to Varin Omega's Hunger Wave, and some of the Wolves are also found among them.

By the time the Embryon reunite with Lupa, Sera identifies that he is too hungry for her to help him, so the Embryon are forced to kill Cerberus. In his final moments, Gale sits by Lupa's side and hears his last words to relay to the son he had been dreaming of: to tell him to become a man of honor. Lupa's death prompts Gale to finally awaken to his emotions.

Cerberus appears in Pyriphlegethon's animation and Gale's memories of the Junkyard.

Trivia

• Cerberus is the only new design created as an Atma Avatar that is not derived from an Indian religion. According to Kazuma Kaneko, it was likely selected for inclusion in the Digital Devil Saga series because Cerberus is considered a mainstay in Megami Tensei.
