Botis is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.
Profile
Origin
Botis is a spirit in European demonology first attested as Otius, the 3rd spirit in The Munich Handbook of Necromancy. Otius is a great prince and count who appears in the sign of a viper with the appearance of a most terrible human, but when he assumes human form he has large teeth and three horns, and he carries a sharp sword. He answers truthfully regarding the present, future, and of the occult, and he gives the grace of friends and foes. He has 36 legions under his command.[1]
Botis is later present as Artis, the 15th spirit in the Livre des esperitz, where he is said to be a great duke wearing two crowns and carrying a sword. He gives answers to questions asked of him, teaches hidden things, and gives good love and grace to people. He has 36 legions under his command.[2]
Botis is further present as the 9th spirit in Johann Weyer's Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, which draws from earlier sources. Botis, also known as Otis, is described very similarly to Otius's description in the Munich Handbook. He is said to be a great president and count in the form of a most terrible viper. When taking human form, he has large teeth and two horns, and he carries a sharp sword. He answers truthfully regarding the present, past, future, and of hidden things. He conciliates both friends and foes, and has command of 60 legions.[3]
In the Ars Goetia section of The Lesser Key of Solomon, which is heavily based on the Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, Botis is said to be the 17th spirit summoned by King Solomon of Israel.[4]
