Black Maria is based on depictions of Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, with dark skin. Official Megami Tensei profiles claim that such depictions originate from the worship of earth mother goddesses,[1][2][3] though this has no historical basis.[citation needed]
Design
According to Shogo Isogai, Black Maria's veil, along with this demon being "Black" Maria at all rather than just Mary, is because he thought it would not be acceptable to outright use Mary.[4]

Statues of the Holy Mother worshiped in Christian churches are generally those of Saint Mary, known as the mother of Christ, but there are some black statues of the Virgin Mary, with aspects for which this cannot be said.
These Black Madonna statues are apparently derived from ancient Middle Eastern earth mother goddesses. It is said that they may be ones such as the Egyptian goddess Isis, the Greek goddess Artemis, or the Phrygian great mother goddess Cybele.

Translation: The Black Holy Mother, whose existence is recognized in several Christian churches. Supposedly originates from ancient earth mother goddesses.
Place of origin: Europe Statues of Mary worshiped in Christian churches are generally considered to represent the Virgin Mary, Mother of Christ, but when it comes to black statues of the Madonna, the Black Maria, such as the one in Montserrat, Spain, their origin is thought to differ. Those ones supposedly originate from ancient earth mother goddesses of the Middle East and Europe. To cite goddesses from whom it is thought that she originated, Isis from Egypt, Artemis from Greece, Inanna from Sumer, Kali from India, and Lilith from Israel are a wide range of examples.
