Profile

Origin

Mary is the mother of Jesus Christ according to Christianity and Islam. These religions teach that she miraculously conceived without sexual intercourse, conceived by the Holy Spirit according to Christianity.

According to the Gospel of Luke, Mary was visited by the angel Gabriel, who told her of her conception of the Christ, the Son of God. She visited her cousin Elisabeth, and Elisabeth greeted her as blessed among women and mother of her Lord. Both the Gospels of Luke and Matthew say that Mary and her husband Joseph went to Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. According to the Gospel of John, when Jesus reached adulthood and went to a wedding in Cana, Mary told Jesus that they have run out of wine, and Jesus performed a miracle and turned water into wine. Also according to John, Mary was present at Jesus's crucifixion, and Jesus put her in the care of the disciple whom he loved (traditionally identified as John the Apostle).

Marian devotion is an aspect of several Christian denominations, and she enjoys a status above all the other saints known as hyperdulia due to giving birth to the Son of God. She is called the Theotokos, which literally means "God-bearer (in childbirth)" and is usually parsed in English as "Mother of God". Another frequent epithet of Mary, especially in Western Christianity, is "Queen of Heaven"; this is derived from her relationship with Jesus, who is considered the King, and it is considered comparable to the title of gebirah for the mothers of the biblical kings of Judah.

According to longstanding Christian tradition first recorded in the noncanonical Gospel of James, Mary's parents were named Joachim and Anne, and Mary was a virgin for her whole life and not just when conceiving Jesus. In Roman Catholicism, Mary is held to have been without sin due to being miraculously conceived without original sin (the Immaculate Conception), and it is believed that she was bodily assumed into heaven either shortly after death or before she would have died. Eastern Orthodoxy teaches that Mary was free from personal sin but not ancestral sin (and thus there was no Immaculate Conception), and it views her as having died before her bodily assumption (called the Dormition). Many of these Marian doctrines were challenged in the Protestant Reformation, though the extent of this varies depending on denomination.

In Shin Megami Tensei: Nine, Maria is not a literal depiction of the Christian figure Mary, but is rather an AI created by the Neo-Messians, a group which broke off from the Messian Church.

Design

For her normal design, the patterns on Maria's clothes and the disc floating above her head are because she is a computer program. The chain she carries represents the binding of the human soul. Kazuma Kaneko Works III suggests that her black clothes are a reference to Black Maria, which it claims to be a remnant of the worship of earth mother goddesses.

For her combat design, the creatures are claimed in Kazuma Kaneko Works III to be reminiscent of the Chaos of earth mother goddesses being absorbed into Mary. The design is stated to be a fusion of Mary the mother of Jesus, whom Kaneko Works claims absorbed the earth mother goddesses' maternal aspects, and Mary Magdalene, a disciple of Jesus often claimed in popular tradition to have been a prostitute, whom Kaneko Works claims absorbed the earth mother goddesses' sexual aspects. These creatures also represent all of the animals in the history of life on Earth. Specific animals featured in the design such as the human, lion, bull, and eagle also allude to the living creatures or "cherubim" from the Book of Ezekiel and are the symbols of the four evangelists.

Shin Megami Tensei V

Maria is the boss of the subquest "The Compassionate Queen", exclusive to the Preservation ending. After obtaining the Seed of Life from Sophia, the quest can be accepted from her in the Empyrean who will maintain her form as Maria and fight the Nahobino. She is unlocked for fusion after completing the quest.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance

While Maria maintains her role from the original game, her quest can also be accessed in the Canon of Vengeance Peaceful route.
