* Before the game begins, Chie lends Yosuke a DVD called ''Trial of the Dragon''. In Japanese, this is named ''The Legend of Seiryū''{{Note|{{JP|成龍伝説|Seiryū densetsu}}}}. * Design-wise, Chie's jacket was a turning point for [[Shigenori Soejima]]. He wanted to include a character in a lame jersey-style jacket to emphasize the Japanese rural stereotype, but he didn't like how the school's colors looked on a jersey jacket. Instead, he tried making Chie's jacket look more retro, and this ended up defining how he would include un-cool things because of the game's rural setting while still being able to make them look stylish.<ref>{{Cite Book|quote=|chapter=Chapter 1: Main Characters|book=[[Persona 4 Official Design Works]]|author=Atlus, Famitsu Editorial Department|publisher=Famitsu (2008)|lang=Japanese|volume=|edition=|page=p. 44|transl=|isbn=978-4757745087}}</ref> | |||

Chie Satonaka is a character in Persona 4. She is a student at Yasogami High School and a member of the Investigation Team.
Profile
Chie is a 2nd year student at Yasogami High who is in the protagonist's class. She befriends the protagonist on his first day of school and later walks him home while introducing him to Inaba. By the start of the story, she has also been long time friends with Yukiko Amagi. Chie has an interest in martial arts and loves meat, and comes off as a tomboy due to these interests. At the same time, Chie shows a struggle with her femininity: Her Shadow reveals that she's jealous of Yukiko's feminine looks, she forces Yosuke to go with her while tailing Kanji so a boy will be there to protect her, and she speaks with a very feminine Japanese pronoun throughout all of her appearances.
Chie is a founding member of the Investigation Team. While she is characterized as punch first and ask questions later, she contributes to solving the murder case by saying whatever happens to be on her mind at the time. She is also known to keep track of gossip, being the one who introduces the Midnight Channel to the group, and keeping track of information about Mayumi Yamano's affair. At school, Chie has been acquainted with Yosuke Hanamura before the story began, evident by how she lent him her Trial of the Dragon DVD. The two go back and forth with one another: He calls her to tell her dirty jokes and gets her involved in his various schemes throughout the school year, and she is unafraid to mess with him back.
Chie cares about fashion as much as anyone else and has realistically colored dyed hair.[1] She wears the Yasogami High uniform with a bright green and yellow jacket over it that she accessorizes with cheap, retro style can badges, one being for the Lexy Dolls. In the TV World, she wears bright lime green oval shaped glasses.

Kotodaman
Chie appears as a unit in the Persona collab for the mobile game Kotodaman. She was in the Persona collab gacha during the original run in 2020, and once again during the rerun in 2024. As a game unit, Chie is a 5★ water-attribute unit who can be used to form words using the syllables that make up her initials: ち・ぢ and さ・ざ. She can be evolved into a 6★ unit. Her 3+ and 4+ syllable skills are named Rampage and Agneyastra, two skills that her Persona learns during Persona 4.[2]
Trivia
- Before the game begins, Chie lends Yosuke a DVD called Trial of the Dragon. In Japanese, this is named The Legend of Seiryū[a]. This is a reference to a Japanese TV drama about a female martial artist called Seiryū Densetsu: Legend of St. Dragon[b] but replaces the 聖龍 in the title with Jackie Chan's Chinese stage name (成龍) with Chie still pronouncing it seiryū (which is the on'yomi reading of Jackie Chan's Chinese stage name, though Jackie Chan is not actually called this in Japanese).
- Design-wise, Chie's jacket was a turning point for Shigenori Soejima. He wanted to include a character in a lame jersey-style jacket to emphasize the Japanese rural stereotype, but he didn't like how the school's colors looked on a jersey jacket. Instead, he tried making Chie's jacket look more retro, and this ended up defining how he would include un-cool things because of the game's rural setting while still being able to make them look stylish.[3]
- In her Yasogami High social media profile in Persona Club P4, Chie says her favorite food is meat, her favorite animals are hamsters and bunnies and other small animals, but she considers math and insects to be the natural enemies of all mankind. Her favorite movies are all kung fu movies. The social clubs she has joined are "Trial of the Dragon", "Burning Dragon", "Fans of Animals with Tiny Eyes", and "Meat Lovers". Her inbox has a message from Yukiko, asking Chie to return her world history notebook.[4] Her Arena Ultimax remastered profile lists the same likes and dislikes, while also adding that Chie is good at her self-taught kung fu and generally athletic, but terrible at cooking.[5]
