Fafnir is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

Fafnir is a dragon from Nordic mythology, he was originally a dwarf, and the son of Hreiðmarr(also known as Hreithmar), alongside his two brothers, Ótr and Regin. Ótr was slain by Loki in an accident, resulting in a heavy payment of a hoard of treasure given to Hreiðmarrto as payment for the killing. This hoard of treasure would then inspires Fafnir to kill his father to get the treasure for himself, after the successful murder of his father, Fafnir then retreats into the wilderness with his treasure, becoming a dragon to protect it. Fáfnir's brother Regin would then convince Sigurd to kill Fafnir for him, which Sigurd successfully did. After Fafnir was killed, Sigurd under Regin's advice cooked Fafnir's heart, while the heart was cooking Sigurd touched the heart to check if it was finished cooking, causing him to burn his finger, which he then placed into his mouth, and the blood of Fafnir's heart then imparted the ability to understand the languages of birds onto Sigurd who then tell him that Regin is going to betray and kill him. Sigurd fearing this, kills Regin, takes the treasure, and leaves.

Design

In Shin Megami Tensei, Fafnir appears as a thick, large purple dragon like creature, with four legs, and a large tail. He has a light orange under body, and matching light orange frills on the side of his head. he also has pure green eyes, 4 sharp horns on the top of his head, and white spikes going across the entire top of head and body. The feet of his design appear to be webbed and has large white claws.

in Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, Fafnir received a redesign, now appearing as a large, slim, robotic dragon, with a long tail, large metallic fins coming out from his upper shoulder area. He also has a metallic mask like face with 2 metallic horn like spikes coming out of it. his elbows and knees now have large metallic plates on them, and throughout his body are small rivet and metal plate like details. On the Left side of his chest, is a submarine window like area, inside of which is a 2 dimensional red heart shape, likely a reference to the significance of his heart in his myth. Unlike his previous design, this version is often shown standing up on his hind legs, and flying.

Also called Fafnir, Farfnir, Fabnir, Favnir. In "The Ring of the Nibelung," he appears under the name Fafner as a giant tribe that transforms into a dragon. His name means "he who embraces." He was the eldest son of the wizard Freismar, and had two younger brothers, Otter and Regin. During the journey of Odin, Loki, and Hänir, they stopped Otter, who had been transformed into an otter, in a river. When this was discovered, the gods paid Otter gold to cover the river inside and out as compensation. Loki took the ring that produced the gold from the dwarf Andvari (who had cursed the ring, or perhaps the ring had been cursed from the beginning) and gave it and the gold to Freismar. Fafnir, captivated by the gold, kills Freismar, takes it and flees to Gunitha Haze, where he is transformed into a poison-spitting dragon to protect the gold (or is turned into a dragon by the ring's curse). Through the scheme of "Regin," "Fafnir" is killed by "Gram," the sword of a young man named "Sigurds," which pierces through his heart.
