Profile

Origin

Narasimha,[a] lit. "man-lion", is the fourth avatar of Vishnu in Hinduism, taking the form of a man with the head and claws of a lion. According to the Bhāgavata Purāṇa, the asura king Hiraṇyakaśipu, who had a grudge against Vishnu for killing his brother, was blessed by Brahma with invulnerability with several qualifiers: he was unable to be killed indoors or outdoors; at day or at night; by hands or by weapons; on the earth or in the sky; by men, beasts, devas, asuras, or mahoragas; and by the living or the dead. Narasimha, being neither man nor beast, was able to slay Hiraṇyakaśipu at the threshold of a building (neither indoors nor outdoors), at sunset (neither day nor night), using his claws (neither hand nor weapon, and also neither alive nor dead), and on his thighs (neither on the earth nor in the sky).
