In tarot, the Tower is the sixteenth of the 21 trump cards, which are called "Major Arcana" in esoteric usage. The imagery originates from Italian tarocchi decks, where it was originally called la Sagitta ("the lightning bolt", literally "the arrow"), now called la Torre. In French, it was called la Foudre ("lightning") or la Maison Dieu ("the house of God", referring to a kind of religious charity hospital). The Tower card typically features a tower being struck by lightning, with the top of the tower being broken off by the strike and people falling from the tower.
Arthur Edward Waite lists the following divinatory meanings in The Pictorial Key to the Tarot: "Misery, distress, indigence, adversity, calamity, disgrace, deception, ruin. It is a card in particular of unforeseen catastrophe. Reversed: According to one account, the same in a lesser degree; also oppression, imprisonment, tyranny."[1]
