Profile

Origin

Taotie (Simplified Chinese: 饕餮, Traditional Chinese: 饕餮, romanized Tāotiè) is one of the Four Perils (Chinese: 四凶, romanized Sì Xiōng) in Chinese mythology, mentioned prominently in the Classic of Mountains and Seas (Simplified Chinese: 山海经, Traditional Chinese: 山海經, romanized Shānhǎijīng), Zuo Zhuan's (Simplified Chinese: 左传, Traditional Chinese: 左傳, romanized Zuǒ Zhuàn) commentary of the Spring and Autumn Annals (Chinese: 春秋, romanized Chūnqiū), and the Book of Gods and Strange Things (Simplified Chinese: 神异经, Traditional Chinese: 神異經, romanized Shényìjīng). It is said to be a gluttonous beast, eating everything in its path and hoarding stolen jewels. Being of the Four Perils, it stands in opposition to the Four Symbols. Its gluttony is represented in its Han characters prominently featuring 食 shí, meaning food, or to feed.

Being one of the Four Perils, Taotie is paired with Hundun, Qiongqi, and Taowu.
