Origin

Ares[a] is a deity in the ancient Greek religion associated with the violent and undesirable aspects of warfare,[1] as opposed to Athena, another Greek war deity who was seen in a positive light. In mythology, Ares is said to be a son of Zeus and Hera.[2] With Aphrodite, he is the father of Phobos, Deimos, and Harmonia.[3]

With regard to his character, in the Iliad, Zeus calls Ares the most loathsome of the Olympians, always seeking strife and war, and he says that Ares has the uncontrollable and relentless spirit of his mother Hera.[4] Ares was usually portrayed in myths with negative personality traits, such as a lack of dignity and shame.[1]

While Ares and Aphrodite were usually portrayed in ancient Greece as consorts,[1] a notable myth unusually portrays this relationship as an adulterous one. In Homer's Odyssey, Ares and Aphrodite are caught in an invisible net by Aphrodite's husband Hephaestus whilst they were having sexual intercourse. The gods laugh at Hephaestus's trap, and the two are released on the condition Ares pay Hephaestus the fine for adultery, and should he not pay, Poseidon would pay Hephaestus twofold on Ares' behalf. Upon their release, Ares flees to Thrace and Aphrodite to Cyprus.[5] The unusual depiction of Aphrodite as Hephaestus's wife in this myth was probably reflective of a local tradition of Lemnos.[1] Homer's association of Ares with Thrace is a poetic device to portray Ares as barbaric, and he also calls him Thracian in the Iliad.[1]

He was identified with the Roman god Mars, despite significant differences in their cults and perceived character.
