Profile

Origin

In the Gospel of John, after Jesus dies on the cross, a Roman soldier stabs him with a spear to ensure he is actually dead. He is given the name Longinus[a] in church tradition, and he is further identified with a Roman centurion in the other three Gospels who says that Jesus was surely the son of God (in Matthew and Mark) or that he was surely a righteous man (in Luke). Longinus is venerated as a saint in Christianity, and his spear is referred to as the Holy Lance or the Spear of Destiny.

According to the Golden Legend, a 13th-century work by Jacobus de Voragine which compiles various hagiographic traditions, Longinus is said to have been blind, but after he stabbed Jesus, the blood landed on his eyes and healed him.

Spearheads claimed to be from Longinus's spear are preserved in St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, Austria, and the Etchmiadzin Cathedral in Vagharshapat, Armenia. The Holy Lance in Austria is bound to a nail claimed to be one of the nails of the True Cross, and it was part of the Holy Roman Emperor's official regalia until the empire's dissolution in 1806.

In his Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers design, his spear resembles the Holy Lance from the Holy Roman Emperor's regalia. The gold cuff, which was added to the relic around 1354 during the reign of Charles IV, is not present.
