Magatsu-Izanagi is a Persona in the Persona series.
Profile
Origin
Unlike many gods and figures used as main character Personas in Persona 4, Magatsu-Izanagi is not a name or figure found in any of Japan's founding texts such as the Kojiki or the Nihonshiki. Regardless, the origins of its name can be traced back to those stories. The word magatsu[a] comes from Izanagi's journey to Yomi. After Izanagi returns, he bathes to rid himself of the impurities accumulated in Yomi. The impurities from his body turn into two gods, Yasomagatsuhi-no-kami and Ōmagatsuhi-no-kami. The two are associated with misfortune, calamity, disaster, and ruin.[1][2]
Design
Magatsu-Izanagi looks exactly like Izanagi, but is now coated in a blood-red substance from head to toe. Designer Shigenori Soejima created Magatsu-Izanagi to be a dark version of the protagonist's Izanagi because he never gets to fight his own Persona as a Shadow, and also because it is used by the protagonist's foil.[3][4]
In Persona 5, Joker's Picaro version of Magatsu-Izanagi has a coat with a black and white stars, similar to the UI elements found in-game.

Magatsu-Izanagi first appeared in Persona 4. It became a fusible Persona in Persona 4 Golden and has re-appeared in multiple Persona series games since then.

Game Appearances
Persona 4
During the December dungeon, Tohru Adachi uses Magatsu-Izanagi as his Persona during his boss fight. When going through the corridors of Yomotsu Hirasaka, Izanami indirectly refers to Adachi as the one who gave himself up to something other than the truth, and in doing so, magatsu twisted his awakened power, hence the name of his Persona.[b]
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax
As Sho explains in Episode Adachi, he recruited Adachi because he planned to turn Magatsu-Izanagi into a Shadow and combine it with the other mass of Shadows to control the entity he was summoning. In Episode P4 and Episode Adachi, Yu and Adachi use Izanagi and Magatsu-Izanagi to finish off Hi-no-Kagutsuchi.
Anime Appearances
Persona 4 The Animation
Adachi summons Magatsu-Izanagi at the end of episode 24 and uses it to fight the Investigation Team during episode 25. Magatsu-Izanagi also appears on the standard edition DVD cover for volume 9.
Persona 4 The Animation: The Factor of Hope

Persona 4 The Golden Animation
During episode 7, Izanagi and Magatsu-Izanagi's weapons clash, allowing Yu to see Adachi's memories. Later, when Yu returns to the TV World, he and Adachi fight again. However, they quit using their Personas and instead brawl in a replica of the Dojima family's living room. Yu wins, and Adachi's body gets taken over by Ameno-sagiri. Adachi passes Yu his tarot card to summon Magatsu-Izanagi, which Yu uses to finish off Ameno-sagiri.
Manga Appearances
Persona 4
The manga adaptation began serialization in 2009 and took until 2019 to finish. Adachi's appearances in the later volumes incorporate elements from his Social Link in Persona 4 Golden and Persona 4 The Golden Animation. Similar to Persona 4 The Golden Animation, after Ameno-sagiri takes over his body, Adachi gives Soji his tarot card to summon Magatsu-Izanagi. Using both his Izanagi and Adachi's Magatsu-Izanagi, Soji finishes off Ameno-sagiri.
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax
In volume 3, Minazuki explains that he recruited Adachi because he wants Magatsu-Izanagi to control the being behind General Teddie. It is aware of how a part of Izanami once possessed Adachi, which makes Adachi's Persona a threat. In volume 4, Adachi passes out but wakes up in time to protect Yu from Hi-no-Kagutsuchi. He remarks that Minazuki was correct about his Persona being one of Hi-no-Kagutsuchi's weaknesses. Together, Yu and Adachi use Izanagi and Magatsu-Izanagi to finish off Hi-no-Kagutsuchi.
Stage Play Appearances
Visualive Persona 4: The Evolution
After the Investigation Team reveals Adachi as the culprit at Junes, everyone automatically enters the TV World. Adachi summons Magatsu-Izanagi and remarks remarks on how his and Hayato's Personas look alike, and wonders if that means they are alike as people.
Persona 4: The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold
Yu is the only person left standing after the rest of the Investigation Team and the Shadow Operatives get defeated by Hi-no-Kagutsuchi. Adachi reappears from the stairs of the audience seating and returns to the stage. Together, they use Izanagi and Magatsu-Izanagi to weaken Hi-no-Kagutsuchi, giving the others enough time to recover so they can all defeat Hi-no-Kagutsuchi together.

Trivia
- Magatsu-Izanagi's name was unknown in the original release of Persona 4 since its name is not spoken nor did it have a compendium entry. Datamining reveals that it has a Persona compendium entry[9] with its name as well as an unused voice line where Adachi calls it by name.[10] The first officially published usage of its name were in the English Visual Data which came with American pre-orders[11] and the Japanese Persona 4 Official Design Works.[12]
- Magatsu-Izanagi was born from the emptiness in Adachi's heart and is used for the sake of his twisted desires.[13][14]
- Due to what happens before his boss battle, it is unclear if Magatsu-Izanagi is truly a Persona or a Runaway Shadow.[15]
- Adachi awakening an Izanagi-type Persona, like the protagonist, might be related to him gaining powers from Izanami.[16]
- The void in Magatsu-Izanagi's epithet, Tempter of the Void,[17] refers to Adachi being the aspect of emptiness in Izanami's machinations.

Notes
- ↑ From the Japanese 禍 (maga, "wickedness, calamity") + つ (tsu, obsolete genitive particle).
- ↑ This is most evident in the Japanese version.[5] In English, Izanami's use of magatsu is localized as evil[6] which is also inconsistent with the localization of the compendium entry for Magatsu-Izanagi and how it says magatsu means calamity.

- ↑ "From Soejima: I came up with this design because the Protagonist has many opportunities to fight a Persona (in Shadow form) belonging to someone else, but never the chance to fight his own. With regard to roles, the person behind this Persona represents the polar opposite of the Protagonist, so I thought it would be appropriate to design a "dark" version of the Protagonist's Persona. The addition of the word "Magatsu" to the name and the creepy pattern running all over the surface of the body make it obvious that this Persona is a being of darkness."
