Nyarlathotep is a character in the Persona series. He is a major antagonist in the Persona 2 duology of Persona 2: Innocent Sin and Persona 2: Eternal Punishment.

Design

In Megami Ibunroku Persona, as Kandori's Persona, Nyarlathotep is a humanoid with two tentacles for arms, four additional tentacles instead of legs, large, bat-like wings, and a featureless white mask for a face. The torso and arm-tentacles are covered in alternating black and white stripes. In his playable form, he is instead a mass of black and red tentacles connected to a central head with a gold crown.

In the Persona 2 duology, Nyarlathotep takes on numerous forms, the majority of which feature black tentacles with blue suckers and green accents. The Great Father form represents the concept of a father as an obstacle that children must overcome in order to mature into adults.[1] The multitude of faces on the Crawling Chaos form represents Nyarlathotep's thousand forms.[2] Several of his forms feature a grey signet ring with a curved star representing the Elder Sign;[a] the only exceptions to this are Nyarlathotep as Kandori's Persona and his Crawling Chaos form.

His unused design for Persona 2: Eternal Punishment was based on a magician.[3][4]

Megami Ibunroku Persona

Nyarlathotep appears as the Persona of Takahisa Kandori. After Kandori's defeat, the Persona takes over his body and transforms into God Kandori. With the Faceless Mask Totem dropped by God Kandori, Nyarlathotep becomes available for fusion in the Velvet Room. Reiji Kido, the half-brother of Kandori, is the only character who can equip this Persona. This is because with Kandori's death, Reiji understands his half-brother's heart.[5]

At the release of Megami Ibunroku Persona, this entity was merely a Persona, a personality that took on the form of the Demon;[6] however, following the release of Persona 2: Innocent Sin, this incarnation of Nyarlathotep was shown to be the same as the Nyarlathotep from Persona 2, manipulating Kandori for his own ends by posing as his Persona.[citation needed]

In Persona 2 Eternal Punishment, as the true Nyarlathotep appeared, God Kandori became one of his incarnations, having been affected by him.[7][8]
