Profile

Origin

Mot (lit. "death") was the god of death in ancient Levantine cultures, mostly attested in Ugaritic sources. In the Baal Cycle, he fights with Baal.

In his Phoenician History, Philo of Byblos mentions Mouth as the name of a son of El, and he equates him with the Greek Thanatos and Plouton.

In the Bible, the personified death mentioned in Jeremiah 9:20 has been suggested by scholars such as Umberto Cassuto to be an allusion to an incident involving Mot in the Baal Cycle; this does not appear to hold up to further scrutiny, however.

Design

Mot is depicted as a horned, blue-skinned demon with reddish or magenta markings on his arms and green, glowing eyes. He is shown partially concealed within a coffin. According to Kazuma Kaneko, Mot is depicted in a coffin to symbolize his role as a god of death. The coffin’s pattern incorporates a winged disc motif from Mesopotamia and a figure of Inanna, representing the realm of the dead.

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne

Mot is a member of the Assembly of Nihilo and one of the guards the Demi-fiend encounters at the Diet Building. After the Demi-fiend defeats Surt and Mada, Mot is slightly taken aback at his abilities but is confident he will be able to stop him. He challenges the Demi-fiend to find him in a room where he has disguised himself as a statue, and upon choosing the correct statue, which is the only statue without a reflection on the floor, Mot curses the Demi-fiend and attacks him, but is defeated.
