Thanatos is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

Thanatos is the Greek god and personification of death. He is a son of Nyx and the twin brother of Hypnos. In literature, he could be seen as both gentle or cruel depending on the author. He was not worshiped.

His Roman counterpart was Mors, who was directly adapted from the Greek Thanatos.

Design

Thanatos's design from Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner is inspired by Baron Harkonnen from the 1984 film Dune.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux	Greek god of death. Son of Nyx, goddess of night. Priest of Hades, ruler of the underworld. Cloaked in dark clothing, Thanatos wields a blade that brings death to its victims. Legend says he cuts the hair of those near death and sends the severed hair to the underworld, which pulls the victims down to their death.

Trivia

• While not the actual inspiration for Thanatos's design, Kaneko has said that Thanatos's design ended up resembling Okuyasu's father from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
