Origin

Thrones are based on the description of the wheels (ophanim in Hebrew) of God's chariot in the Book of Ezekiel, which are interpreted as a class of angel in later writings. The name "throne" comes from Pseudo-Dionysius's work On the Celestial Hierarchy, taking the name from Colossians 1:16, which mentions that God is the creator of thrones, dominions, principalities, and powers. Thrones are usually identified with the ophanim of Ezekiel.
