Tohru Adachi is a supporting character in Persona 4. He is a detective who transferred to the Inaba Police Department during the spring of 2011, and was assigned to work under Ryotaro Dojima.
Profile
Adachi is a 27 year old detective who was formerly stationed in a larger, unnamed city where he was an elite officer. He was transferred to the rural city of Inaba for unknown reasons. He looks down on his reassignment, the city, and the people who live there. Due to this attitude, he doesn't take his job seriously and can frequently be found slacking off at Junes during the afternoon. This earns him the ire of his boss, Dojima, who responds to Adachi's behavior by giving him grunt work like filing paperwork, or trailing the protagonist and his friends around the shopping district. Adachi wears a dark suit with a red tie and brown field boots. His appearance is messy with bedhead hair and a crooked tie. Character designer Shigenori Soejima gave Adachi his unkempt appearance to show that he is truly an elite. Soejima's belief was that an elite like Adachi would be a capable person, but lacking in other areas such as physical appearance. [4] His red tie is a hand-me-down from Dojima, who got tired of seeing Adachi in the shabby tie he wore before. [5]
Gameplay
Persona 4

Persona 4 Golden
Social Link
- For availability and responses, see: Tohru Adachi/Social Link
Adachi's Jester Social Link can be started on May 13th at Junes after unlocking it by talking to Dojima at home. Adachi is only available for Social Link activities on very specific dates. Additionally, no one can be inside of the TV. His Social Link rank up events vary: Ranks 1-2 and 6 take place during the afternoon at Junes, and ranks 3-5 take place at night in the shopping district. If the protagonist doesn't have enough social link points to rank up with him, he has afternoon-only hangouts to go cabbage shopping at Junes. If interacted with at night when not ready to rank up, the protagonist will not receive the usual message about how your relationship with him isn't ready to advance yet.
In order to max his Social Link, the protagonist must get him to rank 6 by November 1st, then choose to visit Adachi alone on December 7th, and finally pursue the true ending on March 20th. Alternatively, if his Social Link is at rank 8 by December 5th, the protagonist will reflect on their time spent with Adachi and be given the option to protect him. This leads to one of the game's bad endings.
Boss
Adachi is fought as a boss on floor 3 of Magatsu Inaba. In combat, he uses the Persona Magatsu-Izanagi.

Game Appearances
Persona 4
April - November, 2011
Adachi first appears on April 14th, running to throw up after seeing the corpse of Mayumi Yamano. From then on, the protagonist and his friends continue to run into Adachi as they investigate the recent murders. On April 15th, the protagonist and Yosuke plan to enter the TV world to look for the missing Yukiko, but they're seen with weapons in the Junes food court and brought to the police station. At the police station, Adachi walks them out and mentions that the police are treating Yukiko as a suspect in the murder of Mayumi Yamano. Whenever the protagonist, Yosuke, and Chie save Yukiko from the TV world, Dojima and Adachi will show up that night at the Dojima residence. Adachi formally introduces himself here and also lets the protagonist know that Yukiko has come back home. When the protagonist, Yosuke, and Chie welcome Yukiko to the Investigation Team on April 30th, Adachi appears in the Junes food court and chats with them about the case. His ramblings about Saki Konishi and Misuzu Hiiragi give Chie the impression that the police are going to be useless in the murder case.
Adachi appears again in June when Rise Kujikawa begins working at her family's tofu shop, Maru Q Tofu. On June 22nd, he was assigned to do traffic duty due to the police department being short-handed. Later that same day, he and Dojima talk to Rise. Dojima becomes suspicious when he hears that the protagonist, Yosuke, and Kanji spoke to Rise earlier and warned her. As a result, on June 23rd, Dojima assigns Adachi to babysit the Investigation Team. Adachi is surprised when they invite him to come along to Maru Q Tofu. Yukiko points out that there's a man on a telephone pole with a camera, and Adachi arrests him and takes him in for questioning under the assumption that he's the murderer. On the day that Rise Kujikawa is rescued from the TV world, Dojima and Adachi once more will appear at the Dojima residence. This time, Dojima is drunk and ranting about Naoto Shirogane, Adachi's incompetence, and the protagonist showing up at crime scenes.
Shortly after Mitsuo Kubo turns himself in during July, he goes missing by July 23rd. The protagonist finds Adachi slacking off at Junes and promises not to tell Dojima so long as Adachi tells him about Kubo. Adachi shows up at the Dojima residence again on August 13th to celebrate Kubo's capture and the end of the murder case. He brings up the possibility that a real killer might be out there before Dojima tells him to shut up. On the day that Naoto is rescued from the TV, Adachi is drunk at the Dojima residence when the protagonist returns home. While drunk, he talks about how the police can't pin any of the murders besides Morooka on Kubo, and that Dojima's detective intuition might be correct about there being another killer out there still.
On November 5th, Dojima takes the protagonist to the police station after receiving a 2nd threatening letter at home. Adachi is also present in the interrogation room during this time. After Dojima leaves to look for Nanako, the Investigation Team convinces Adachi to let the protagonist leave the police station by determining the culprit might be a delivery truck driver. Adachi points out that Taro Namatame, who was dating victim Mayumi Yamano, is a delivery truck driver. At the scene of Dojima and Namatame's car crash, Naoto reads that the murder victims (Mayumi and Saki), as well as the kidnapped people whose names were not released to the public (Yukiko, Kanji, Rise, and Naoto), are all written in Namatame's journal. Adachi proclaims the case must be over.
December 3 - 5, 2011
On December 3rd, Adachi tells the Investigation Team there's no way the story about the TV world will hold up in court and that Namatame might walk free. When Nanako flatlines, the Investigation Team takes matters into their own hands and determines Namatame's fate. This can lead to a bad ending. If the protagonist can convince the rest of his friends not to murder Namatame and keep seeking the truth, then on December 5th, the Investigation Team gathers at Aiya to discuss the case and who the culprit could be. The protagonist can bring up Adachi as a possible suspect: He's a detective connected to the murder case, and he would be able to drop off the threatening letters at Dojima's house without raising suspicions since he's a friend of the family. Something about Adachi bothers Naoto, but Naoto is unable to identify what it is. At first, Yukiko doesn't believe it could be Adachi because he showed up at the Amagi Inn claiming he had been assigned to protect Mayumi. But hearing about this previously unknown detail is a surprise to Naoto, and it's left ambiguous if Adachi was telling Yukiko the truth or not back in April. Kanji also brings up something suspicious he heard about Adachi but admits he didn't think much of it because Adachi is an officer.
The Investigation Team heads back to the hospital. There, they learn Adachi had Namatame taken away. Dojima finds this uncharacteristic of Adachi since up until now he has been slacking on his detective work. The protagonist and Naoto continue asking Adachi about the case until he lashes out, asking why they're questioning him if they already know that Namatame put everyone in. Hearing this makes Naoto think back to November 5th.[c] When Naoto read the names from Namatame's diary and said the victims who had yet to be released to the public were also written in the diary, Adachi didn't find that strange and said that the case was settled. But from working on the case with the Inaba PD, Naoto was aware that the police were not treating the missing people as victims, and so Adachi is exposed as the real culprit behind the Inaba murders due to his impatience in trying to convict Namatame. In response, Adachi runs away and enters the TV world through the TV in Namatame's former hospital room.
December 7, 2011
On December 7th, a recently returned Teddie sniffs out Adachi in the remnant of Mayumi Yamano's dungeon. Yosuke asks for answers, and Adachi explains his side of the plot. He heard about the Midnight Channel rumor from somewhere, discovered his ability to stick his hand in the TV, then went to the Amagi Inn and spoke to Mayumi. Adachi asked Mayumi if the rumors about her and Namatame were true. When Mayumi refused to answer, he pushed her into the TV. Mayumi's corpse was discovered by Saki. Using his position as a detective, Adachi called Saki in for more questioning after he saw her out in public with Namatame. Adachi tried to force himself on her, but Saki slapped him away, and he threw her into a TV. After Yukiko appeared on the Midnight Channel, a panicked Namatame called the police and it was Adachi who took the call. Adachi pretended not to believe Namatame about the connection between the TV and the murders but suggested that he protect the people who appear on the TV. This phone call caused Namatame to start trying to "save" people by putting them into TVs, not realizing that Adachi was the real murderer and that the TV was what killed Mayumi and Saki.
Back in the present, Naoto deduces that Adachi put Mitsuo Kubo into the TV. Adachi confirms that he put Mitsuo into the TV after he turned himself in, then told the rest of the police force that he had sent Mitsuo home. Adachi explains that Namatame throwing someone in and the Investigation Team rescuing them was like a game of cat and mouse that he enjoyed watching unfold. Putting Mitsuo in was necessary so Namatame wouldn't quit saving people and the game could keep going. However, the omniscient player will have seen Adachi appear as the mystery figure in the shopping district on April 29th (Yukiko's deadline), June 4th (Kanji's deadline), and October 5th (Naoto's deadline) and get increasingly frustrated.[6] Because of the fog figure's appearance dates and how the first threatening letter is sent on October 20th after the figure's last appearance, the player will be aware there's an inconsistency in what Adachi is saying. The Investigation Team will remain ignorant of this.
Rise suddenly realizes that the Adachi they're speaking to isn't the real Adachi. Adachi's projection invites the Investigation Team to come and see his real self in his dungeon, Magatsu Inaba, which he created to mislead them.[7] Before vanishing, the projection also informs them that the fog is leaking and the TV world will replace the real world by the end of the year. This threat proves to be credible if the protagonist fails to meet Adachi's dungeon deadline of December 24th. The protagonist will receive a phone call from Naoto who gets attacked by a Shadow in reality before Igor offers to rewind time back one week.
December 8 - 24, 2011
Adachi taunts the Investigation Team as they enter each floor of Magatsu Inaba. He insults them for being high schoolers, and asks why they don't just accept that Namatame is behind the murders like the media is telling them. After jumping down into Magatsu-Mandala and clearing that area, they are finally able to reach the real Adachi on floor 3 of Magatsu Inaba. There, Adachi offers his viewpoints and tries to justify his actions. The members of the Investigation Team have varying responses to him. Ultimately, none of them can see eye to eye with him, and they reject him. Adachi gains yellow eyes and a purple aura then attacks the party with his gun and Persona, Magatsu-Izanagi. After being defeated, Adachi expresses it doesn't matter if the real world disappears because he had nowhere left to go back to. As he begins to laugh about it, his body is suddenly taken over by a being called Amenosagiri.
Amenosagiri talks through Adachi and explains that it's leaking fog into the real world so it can grant mankind's desire to live in ignorance. The Investigation Team tells it that mankind doesn't want that. They fight and defeat Amenosagiri with their Personas to prove mankind's potential. It disappears, returning both Adachi and the real world back to normal. Adachi assumes the Investigation Team came to kill him and will leave him to die in the TV world. Kanji and Yosuke tell him that they intend to take him back and answer for his crimes because that's how things work in the real world. Back in the Junes electronics department, Adachi is speechless when he learns that Dojima cared enough to send an ambulance for him.
March 20, 2012
On March 20th, the protagonist receives a letter from an unknown sender. If the protagonist pursues the true ending, the protagonist opens the letter in the Junes food court and reveals that it's from Adachi. In his letter, Adachi promises to follow the rules of the real world from now on. But there's something about the case that's been bothering him. He doesn't remember who first told him about the Midnight Channel, he thinks it's connected to him gaining his power shortly after arriving in Inaba, and vaguely recalls something similar in a file about Namatame. The Investigation Team goes on to discover that Izanami was the person who kicked off the events of the past year by giving the protagonist, Adachi, and Namatame their powers.
Persona 4 Golden
Adachi's role in Persona 4 Golden is the same as it was in Persona 4, but he now has a couple new scenes and a Social Link. On June 8th, the protagonist comes home and finds Dojima and Adachi eating eel. The protagonist asks Dojima about getting a scooter license. Dojima shows concern, but Adachi supports the protagonist and even tells him about how Dojima used to ride around on one too. On June 9th, Dojima and Adachi present Dojima's old bike to the protagonist at the Moel gas station. Adachi mentions that it'd be nice if the police had scooters so they could chase down a suspicious photographer, alluding to the man who Yukiko finds on the pole on June 23rd. Independent of the protagonist's interactions with Adachi, if the protagonist maxes out Marie's Social Link and does the true ending, then Izanami will clarify on March 20th that she hid Amenosagiri in Adachi. Additionally, in the flashforward epilogue when the protagonist returns to Inaba, Dojima will mention that he saw Adachi in jail and he's doing well. Part of Dojima's visit is shown during the epilogue of Episode Adachi in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax.
Social Link
- For availability and responses, see: Tohru Adachi/Social Link
Adachi is the Jester Social Link. His Social Link events flesh out his character and backstory. His parents didn't care what he did as long as his grades were good, so all he did was study. He never learned how to cook and is currently single, but wishes he had a cute girlfriend at home who cooked for him. He hints at his fixation on Mayumi Yamano by talking about how he had a girlfriend until recently but her personality wasn't as pretty as her looks. The protagonist offers to cook for him instead, resulting in Adachi visiting the Dojima household a couple times at night and eating with the protagonist and Nanako. The only other person who makes meals for Adachi is an older woman he runs into at Junes. She keeps pestering Adachi due to him having the same given name as her son, and brings him nimono with hard renkon. On his rank 6 event, the woman and her real son show up at Junes together, and he finds out that she keeps making him nimono with hard renkon because that's what her real son likes. Adachi remarks that he looks nothing like the real son and she could have used anyone as a placeholder for him; it didn't have to be him. The protagonist thinks that Adachi will be lonely without the older woman now, and he responds that he prefers being alone. Admittedly, he is lonely, but he also thinks it's easier.
Completing his Social Link is dependent on the protagonist getting his Social Link to rank 6 no later than November 1st. Rank 7 and rank 8 will occur automatically at the hospital. Adachi tells the protagonist to get some rest and enjoy his freedom while Dojima and Nanako are hospitalized. On December 7th, there is a new scene after the portal to Magatsu Inaba appears. Rise senses Adachi calling out to the protagonist, and Naoto expresses concern over the protagonist going to confront Adachi alone due to their relationship. If the protagonist goes against their friends' wishes and sees Adachi alone, Adachi will send another fake projection to express his annoyance at the protagonist for coming alone despite Adachi telling him to come back with his friends. During the conversation, the protagonist will be unable to get through to Adachi, and Adachi's Social Link arcana changes from Jester to Hunger. After defeating Amenosagiri, Adachi tells the protagonist that despite having the same powers the two of them took very different paths. If he had been more like the protagonist, then maybe things would have gone differently for him. During the true ending, Adachi's letter continues on after he talks about the Midnight Channel. He's been thinking about Dojima, Nanako, and the protagonist lately. He didn't find his interactions with the three of them fun before, but now he looks at them differently. Adachi will also appear during the Social Link sequence in the final battle. After Izanami uses Thousand Curses, he makes fun of the protagonist for taking a little nap on the ground while he's being made to pay for crimes.[d] He encourages the protagonist to stand up, and once again emphasizes how different they are.
Adachi's Social Link also unlocks the new bad ending. On December 5th, the protagonist will reflect on the time they've spent with Adachi and be asked if they really want to bring up his name. If the protagonist chooses to protect Adachi, the truth never comes to light and time fast forwards to March 20th. As with the other bad endings, the fate of Inaba is unknown and the fog is still strong, but Adachi never entered the TV as he did in the good endings and the threat to replace reality with the TV world by the end of 2011 never came to fruition. Instead, the protagonist can go visit Adachi one final time before leaving Inaba. Adachi has the protagonist prove they're on his side by burning the letter sent to the Dojima house. The protagonist does so, and destroys the only physical evidence that could have tied Adachi to the case. Adachi mockingly tells the protagonist that the truth is what people want it to be, and this was the truth the protagonist wanted. After the usual sequence of protagonist leaving on the train, there's a new animation of the protagonist spotting Adachi walking through the fog. This ending is called the Adachi Ending,[e] but is more commonly known by fans as the Accomplice Ending.[f]
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax
Episode P4
When the Investigation Team gathers at Junes after the events of Persona 4 Arena, Yosuke brings up the possibility that Adachi might be the culprit again. Yu doesn't think that makes sense because Adachi has a Persona and the culprit they're looking for is someone without one. But the real reason why Yu doesn't think it's Adachi is because Adachi told them he would follow the rules of the real world in the letter he sent in the true ending of Persona 4.
In chapter 5, Yu, Yosuke, and Chie are walking through hallways in the tower that resemble Yasogami High when they run into Adachi. At first, they think that this Adachi is one of the fakes who they've been fighting, but Yu observes his mannerisms and comes to the conclusion that he's the real Adachi. Adachi explains that he's helping Sho, whose goal is to destroy the world. Yu tries to reason with Adachi, asking why he's helping Sho when he promised them he would abide the rules. Similar to December 7th in Persona 4, Adachi replies it's because he's bored and he doesn't care what happens to Inaba. However, Adachi also mentions something about Persona fragments before walking off. Adachi appears again in chapter 9, which takes place in the tower room resembling the entrance of the Tartarus. The trio hides and overhears Sho having a disagreement with Adachi. Yu sees Sho threatening Adachi and wonders if he should help, but instead remains hidden and listens. Sho reveals that he knows the trio is there, and they have to fight Sho and then his alter ego Minazuki. Adachi tries to warn them about what Minazuki is doing before leaving again.
Upon reaching the top of the tower in chapter 12, Yu finds the large crystallized structure made of Persona fragments with Sho beside it and Adachi on the ground beside him. He eavesdrops on their conversation, learns that Adachi was pretending to help Sho while plotting to disrupt Sho's plans, and that everything Adachi said before was an act he put on for the Investigation Team. Sho gets angry at Adachi over the betrayal and grabs him by the collar when Yu reveals himself and steps in to save Adachi. Adachi tells Yu he didn't do this because of him or his friends before passing out. When Adachi comes to, Hinokagutsuchi has been summoned, and he berates Yu for having not finished things yet. The two combine their strength, summon Izanagi and Magatsu-Izanagi, then defeat Hinokagutsuchi together with a sword-like attack.
In the regular ending to Episode P4, Adachi vanishes from the top of the tower without any explanation after Hinokagutsuchi is defeated. When Yu meets back up with his friends and the Shadow Operatives, Yosuke asks Yu what happened to Adachi. Having heard what Adachi was doing all along during the P-1 Climax, Yu assures his friends that Adachi will make good on his promise to play by the rules from now on.
In the true ending, Adachi doesn't vanish from the tower. Instead, Episode Adachi shows what happens when he's teleported to the TV world's studio area alongside Yu and Sho.
Episode P3
Adachi first appears during chapter 9, which is told from the perspective of Mitsuru Kirijo. As she and other members of the Shadow Operatives face a wave of Shadows at Junes, Adachi shows up and helps them by clearing out the Shadows and hints about what Sho is up to before leaving. He appears again in chapter 10 when Labrys reaches the top of the tower. Similar to Episode P4, Labrys finds the large crystalized structure made up of Persona fragments with Sho beside it and Adachi on the ground at Sho's heel. After Labrys defeats Hinokagutsuchi, Elizabeth appears and teleports Labrys and her friends away to safety as the tower collapses. Labyrs is concerned about whether she'll help Sho and Adachi too, but she gets teleported before she can say something to Elizabeth. At the beginning of chapter 11, Labrys sees that Sho made it to safety and figures Adachi must be okay as well.
Episode Adachi
Adachi's story coincides with the events of Episode P4 and the unlocked true ending, but told from his perspective. In addition to showing what's going on in Adachi's mind during these events, his story also has scenes related to his involvement in the P-1 Climax that aren't in Episode P3 or P4.
Episode Adachi starts with Adachi being held in a jail cell at a police station. An older detective and his younger partner interrupt him eating dinner and call him into the interrogation room. They present evidence: A large screen TV, a model gun that Adachi rigged to fire, and a portable music player that Adachi won. The older detective brings up Dojima. Adachi believes he should just cut ties with him already now that he's a criminal. The detective goes too far, assuming that Dojima has also murdered and that Adachi was just following his example. Adachi gets irritated at this and brings up the older detective's own reputation. The detective responds by punching Adachi. He gets ready to hit Adachi again, and Adachi braces for it, but instead he hears a gun click. The older detective has been taken over by Minazuki who uses the gun to force Adachi into the large screen TV.
Once inside the TV world, Adachi finds himself in a recreation of Yasogami High. He meets Minazuki, who gives him a gun and tests his combat ability. After, Minazuki says that there's no value in this world that's full of liars who talk about friendship and bonds while leaving others behind. In his thoughts, Adachi admits there's a time when he agreed with what Minazuki is saying, but not anymore. Regardless, Adachi agrees goes along with Minazuki's plan, though he isn't given much of a choice. Minazuki explains that he's creating a vessel out of Shadows for another entity to inhabit, and he's planned to collect Persona fragments to control this entity. He wants Adachi to help collect Persona fragments by fighting in the P-1 Climax, and also wants to use the power that remains inside of Adachi to control the aforementioned entity. Sho takes control of his own body from Minazuki and greets Adachi then sends him off to fight in the P-1 Climax.
Adachi walks through the hallways and runs into Yu, Yosuke, and Chie. The scene plays out the same as chapter 5 in Episode P4, but this time the narrative shows Adachi's inner thoughts as he misleads them. To them, he's an escaped criminal, and assuming he's allied with Sho fits their preconceptions about him. He doesn't care much what they think of him as long as they can stop Minazuki's plan to destroy the world. He proceeds to indirectly assist them by giving them hints about the Persona fragments before leaving. Later, Adachi finds Sho in the room resembling the Tartarus. Sho talks about being bored since his plan is going off without a hitch. This leads to chapter 9 from Episode P4. Adachi gets into an argument with Sho who then threatens to kill him. As he looks around the room, he spots Yu, Yosuke, and Chie trying to hide. Sho also notices them and they end up fighting. Yu and his friends win, but Adachi tells himself that Yu doesn't know about Sho's other personality who can use a Persona. Like before, he tries to indirectly warn them about what's coming. After Yu fights Minazuki, Adachi is almost about to get involved to prevent Yu from dying but Naoto and Labrys show up to help Yu instead. The ground starts shaking and Minazuki departs after announcing he has the necessary Persona fragments. Adachi tries to give the Investigation Team more hints about what's going on again before he runs back to the roof.
Adachi makes it to the roof where Sho is standing next to the large mass of Persona fragments. Adachi takes aim and shoots at it which causes Sho to get angry and fight Adachi over his betrayal. Adachi wins and has his pistol against Sho's head, but Sho's eyes turn red and he reveals he can also use the same kind of power as Minazuki. Adachi loses control of his body as Sho gets on top and starts punching him. Sho describes how he planned on taking Adachi's Persona, turning it into a Shadow, and adding it to the other mass of Shadows. Additionally, the power remaining inside of Adachi has the ability to interfere with the being that Sho wants to absorb, and Sho saw that as a way to control Hinokagutsuchi since it won't be at full strength due to the presence of Amenosagiri. After using Adachi, Sho planned on killing him.
This leads into chapter 12 of Episode P4. Sho compares the two of them, saying he's going to succeed where Adachi failed in destroying the world. Adachi tells Sho they're not the same. He repeats what Yukiko said to him back in December and likens Sho to a child throwing a tantrum. Sho grabs Adachi by the collar when Yu reveals himself and steps in to save Adachi. Adachi tells Yu he didn't do this because of him or his friends before passing out. When Adachi comes to, Hinokagutsuchi has been summoned, and he berates Yu for having not finished things yet. The two combine their strength, summon Izanagi and Magatsu-Izanagi, and defeat Hinokagutsuchi together with a sword-like attack. Adachi passes out after the battle and wakes up on the floor of the TV studio with Yu and Sho. He encourages Sho to start over as he's still young and it's not too late for him yet, then returns to the real world. Much to Adachi's annoyance, Yu stops him to wish him good luck and lets him know that Dojima plans on visiting him.
The epilogue of Episode Adachi takes place months after the P-1 Climax, but shortly before the epilogue in Persona 4 Golden. The prosecution has brought forth formal charges against Adachi,[g] he's been moved to a detention center, and he has the possibility of getting capital punishment.[h] For now, he's just glad he isn't involved in anything like the P-1 Climax again. He reflects on the long road behind him and how quickly he traveled it: He hated his life, discovered he had a special power, used it to fill a void in his heart, but lost to the Investigation Team and agreed to face his punishment because that's how things work in the real world. He tries to sleep, but Dojima shows up to visit him. As they talk, Adachi finally accepts their bond which he tried to throw away.
Persona 4: Dancing All Night
The main story of the game takes place after the Golden epilogue, by which point Adachi is in detention and awaiting trial as seen in his epilogue for Persona 4 Arena Ultimax. Adachi doesn't appear in the main story and is only a DLC character, but an explanation was given by Atlus regarding his appearance and the canon of Persona 4. Teppei Kobayashi explained that Adachi dances in Yomotsu Hirasaka because it's where the protagonist goes in his dreams on his first night in Inaba, thus Adachi's stage may or may not be him dreaming about dancing in-universe.[8] The Yu who appears during Adachi's Fever Time is not really him, but a dream based on Adachi's perception of Yu being kind of pushy and naive. This also reflects in how he dances compared to the real Yu.[9]
Persona 5
If Joker interacts with the TV in Leblanc on December 12th, Adachi appears in an unnamed cameo as "Suspect Under Investigation" [10] and references one of his lines from Persona 4. [i]
Anime Appearances
Persona 4 The Animation
In the first Persona 4 anime adaptation, Adachi appears as a supporting character and fulfills the same role as he does in the video game. He's treated as comedic relief who does things like stroke a cabbage. As the plot progresses to December, the anime changes some of the details about how Naoto unveils Adachi as the culprit, but the conclusion is the same with Adachi being confronted at the hospital and going into the TV. Inside the TV world, the Investigation Team enters Magatsu Inaba immediately and finds Adachi. The dungeon serves as a recreation of locations around Inaba, and Adachi gives his side of the plot by showing them his memories using these set pieces. After being beaten by Yu, Adachi puts his gun to his head and intends to shoot himself. Yu rushes to try and stop him when Amenosagiri suddenly takes over Adachi's body. In the BD/DVD only bonus episode that adapts the true ending from the game, Adachi's letter arrives and he narrates its contents over a scene showing him and Namatame in jail.
Persona 4 The Animation: The Factor of Hope
The Factor of Hope is a theatrical version of Persona 4 The Animation that focuses on the last few episodes of the TV anime and also includes the true ending from the unaired BD/DVD-only bonus episode. Like episode 24 of the TV anime, Adachi is used as a narrative tool to recap the plot up until December.
Persona 4 The Golden Animation
While the first Persona 4 anime was a full adaptation of the game's narrative, the Golden anime skips around on the timeline and adapts the new material from Persona 4 Golden with a special focus on Marie. In episode 1, Adachi is shown being chewed out by Ai Ebihara. In episode 4, when Dojima gives Yu his old scooter, Adachi rides it up to the Moel gas station to hand it off. In episode 5, Dojima drags a resistant Adachi along to Rise's concert at Junes. After the concert, Marie sees Adachi and detects something odd about him. This leads into the beginning of episode 6 where Marie stalks Adachi around Inaba and warns Yu to stay away from him. During episodes 6 and 7, the anime adapts Adachi's Social Link, reimagines him as having committed murder due to feeling left out of the Dojima family thanks to Yu's arrival in Inaba, and has a flashback showing him while he was still in school. In the Japanese cast and staff commentary for episode 7, the anime creative staff says this is just their interpretation of Adachi, encourages fans to come up with their own take, and emphasizes that only the original creators (Atlus) have all the answers.[11]
Back in April, Adachi transfers to Inaba and first sees Mayumi Yamano on a program as he drives into town. Dojima welcomes him into his home and encourages that he form bonds with people around town. Adachi tries to adjust to his life in Inaba and get to know the locals. But when he contacts Dojima, Dojima tells him not to call him unless it's an emergency since his nephew is coming to town to live with him and he'll be busy. While drinking alone at night, Adachi happens to see Mayumi on the Midnight Channel and discovers that he can put his hand into the TV. By chance, he gets assigned to guard Mayumi while she stays at the Amagi Inn. After she refuses to answer him about the affair, he throws her into the TV. After Yu arrives in Inaba, Adachi stands outside the Dojima house in the rain and peers into the house without knocking. The night after, Adachi gets rejected by Saki and murders her. He misses his phone ringing and checks it after and sees he has a message from Dojima inviting him to dinner, but now he can only laugh about it. Yu, Adachi, and Nanako go shopping for gardening supplies at Junes where they run into an older woman who also has a son named Tohru. Adachi has had run-ins with her before and she keeps making him nimono. On another day, Yu and Adachi see the older woman with her real son named Tohru at Junes, and Adachi remarks on him being used as a placeholder. Following this, Yu begins bringing Adachi food at his apartment, inviting him to come over for dinner, and sending him home with leftovers. When Adachi asks Yu why he's doing this, Yu replies that he wants to and doesn't need a reason to help others. When Adachi opens his fridge, it's full of food from Yu that he never ate that he begins to throw all of it away.
In December, Nanako has been hospitalized and the Investigation Team meets at Aiya to discuss who the culprit could be. Yu leaves his friends and goes to confront Adachi in Mayumi's dungeon. The two of them summon their Personas and attack one another, but there's a flash of white light when they two cross spears and Yu sees inside of Adachi's head: Memories of his days in school, only studying and never making any friends; Adachi becomes an officer, but his coworker gets promoted while he's given a transfer order to Inaba; Dojima takes him around town and gives him a red mug to use when he's at the Dojima house, then says not to call him while he's helping his nephew move into town; Yu's arrival in Inaba and Adachi becoming more distant even though Yu himself is trying to reach out to him. Having seen inside of Adachi's mind, Adachi tells him to leave and go back to his friends. Yu returns with the Investigation Team and takes Adachi on by himself. After fighting with their Personas and not making any headway, their fight turns into a fist fight inside the replica of the Dojima household living room in Magatsu Inaba. Yu overpowers Adachi and punches him to finish it. Adachi chalks up the differences between the two as Yu having bonds and Adachi himself having none. Yu picks up the replica of Adachi's red mug and sets it to next to other 3 colored mugs to remind Adachi that he did have bonds, and says it's time to go home. However, Amenosagiri takes over Adachi's body and Yu takes it on by himself. During the fight, Adachi lends Yu his Magatsu-Izanagi tarot card and Yu uses it to finish things. When Amenosagiri is defeated, it vanishes and Yu catches Adachi as he falls from the sky. By March, Adachi is shown eating by himself in jail while Yu reads a letter from Adachi where he talks about looking back on his time spent with Yu, Dojima, and Nanako.
Adachi appears alongside Yu on the cover of BD/DVD volume 4 and is also included in both of the anime's audio dramas that come with the BD/DVDs. BD/DVD volume 4 also includes a special called "Thank You Mr. Accomplice" that serves as an alternate second half to episode 7. Yu returns to Mayumi's dungeon by himself. There, Yu says he wants to save Adachi which leads to the anime's version of the Adachi Ending playing out with the letter being burnt and Adachi threatening Yu not to run away. Yu says he won't run, and the anime shows Yu, his friends, and Adachi carrying on like normal after while Inaba is full of fog. On March 20th, Yu sees Adachi in the fog from the window of his train like in the game's bad ending. The focus then switches back to Adachi who sighs and says he's bored now.
Audio Drama Appearances
Persona 4 Audio Drama
Adachi is volume 3 of the game's audio drama. Dojima and Adachi arrive at the Dojima house where the Investigation Team are studying. Despite bragging about being an elite, Adachi doesn't know any of their school material. Later, he drives Dojima to Yasogami High for sports day so he can run in the three-legged race with Nanako. The protagonist thanks Adachi for his help.
Persona 4 The Animation Audio Drama
Adachi is in volume 2 of the first anime's audio drama. Dojima orders Adachi to deliver a souvenir to the prefectural police headquarters. Adachi gives Yu a lift, but the two of them get sidetracked when Adachi's car breaks down.
Persona 4 The Golden Animation Audio Drama
Adachi is in volumes 1 and 2 of the second anime's audio drama. During volume 1, Dojima bribes him with a free meal to help plant vegetables in the garden outside the Dojima house. Yu also offers to give him some of the vegetables after they've grown. During volume 2, Dojima is drinking at Shiroku Pub and Adachi has to put up with his drunk rambling about Naoto.
Manga Appearances
Persona 4
In the early volumes of the manga adaptation, Adachi appears as a supporting character and fulfills the same role as he does in the original Persona 4 video game. Between the start and end of the manga's serialization (2009 to 2019), various other games and media came out that expanded on Adachi's role. His appearances in the later volumes incorporate elements from his Social Link in Persona 4 Golden and also the Persona 4 Golden The Animation staff's interpretation of Adachi from episodes 6 and 7. Adachi has a color page in volume 4 of him comparing cabbages in Junes. He also makes an appearance on the cover of volume 12 alongside Soji.
An older woman is introduced talking to Adachi at Junes on an unidentified day. Later, on November 13th, Soji sees Adachi at Junes and the two go grocery shopping together. Soji invites Adachi over for dinner after hearing that he can't cook, but Adachi avoids responding to his invitation. Suddenly, he hears the older woman saying Tohru and assumes she's talking to him. But when he turns around, she's with her real son who's also named Tohru. Adachi remarks that she could have used anyone as a substitute for her son; it didn't have to be him. After the woman and her son leave, Adachi asks Soji what's for dinner. Back at the Dojima house, Adachi complains about adult life as the two eat. Soji asks Adachi to stop by again sometime, but Adachi turns him down. Adachi compares Soji to the older woman, saying that Soji could invite any of his friends over if he's lonely. It doesn't have to be Adachi. This has an effect on Soji, who has an on-going sub-plot in the manga about his loneliness and distant relationship with his parents.
Shortly after in December, Adachi is exposed as the culprit. The Investigation Team enters Magatsu Inaba and fights Adachi. He defeats all of them aside from Soji and Teddie. Soji tells Teddie to help the other and he goes on to confront Adachi alone. Soji argues that Adachi, being a lonely person himself, should have been able to understand Soji, Dojima, and Nanako's own struggles with loneliness. But instead of recognizing that and getting closer, Adachi put physical and emotional distance between himself and the other three, then felt left out. Adachi lashes out, saying it's the world that's wrong. He attacks Soji, but Soji's friends rise up to help him and together they defeat Adachi. Soji's able to empathize with Adachi and realize that Adachi accepting his dinner invite was his way of trying to reach out. He only wishes that he came to Inaba earlier and gotten to know Adachi better. During the battle versus Amenosagiri, Adachi reflects on how he was being used by a higher being and he's not very special at all. But instead of letting this get to him, Adachi helps Soji out by giving him Magatsu-Izanagi. Adachi falls from the sky after Amenosagiri disappears and Soji rushes to catch him. Adachi tells him and his friends that so long as they have the power to change the future, they can live however they want. He expects them to leave him to die, but Yosuke tells him that he's going to live and be brought to justice.
When Soji reads Adachi's letter in March, it shows a flashback of Adachi writing the letter in jail as he talks about his interactions with Dojima, Nanako, and Soji. During the final battle versus Izanami, Soji and his friends are swallowed by Izanami's Thousand Curses. Soji becomes lost; he can feel his friends nearby, but doesn't see them. Adachi is the only Social Link who appears to Soji at first. He encourages Soji to stand up and make the future he and the rest of the Investigation Team are after. Soji lifts his head and sees the rest of his friends from Inaba standing with Adachi. With their help, Soji goes on to defeat Izanami.
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax
The manga adaptation generally follows the plot of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax's Episode P4 and includes scenes from Episode Adachi plus the game's true ending. Adachi is being interrogated in jail when Minazuki mind controls the interrogating detective and uses his gun to force Adachi to climb into a flat screen TV. Once inside, Minazuki invites him to witness the end of the world. General Teddie appears on a TV and tells Minazuki to hurry up and kill Adachi, but Minazuki tells him that Sho wanted to let Adachi watch, and Minazuki gives Sho what he wants. General Teddie relents, but reminds Minazuki to collect fragments. Minazuki orders Adachi to fight the P-1 Climax then turns on a TV to show him what it is. Adachi watches Yu and Yosuke fight fakes of Rise and Naoto. Sho takes over his body from Minazuki and mocks Yu and Yosuke for their friendship and teamwork. He tosses Adachi a remote on his way out. When Adachi uses it, the TV broadcasts a quiz show which he participates in with small Shadows.
The quiz show helped Adachi come to an understanding of what Sho and Minazuki are doing to bring about the end of the world. He uses this knowledge to give Yu, Yosuke, and Chie hints about the Persona fragments and the source of both Sho and Minazuki's powers that activate when their eyes turn red. On top of the tower, Minazuki tells Adachi that he needs Magatsu-Izanagi in order to control the being behind General Teddie. It's aware of how Adachi was once possessed by a part of Izanami and this makes Adachi's Persona a threat. Adachi agrees to summon Magatsu-Izanagi for Minazuki. But instead of summoning it, he reminds himself that he said he'd follow the rules, and shoots the Persona fragments structure instead. Sho takes over his body and attacks Adachi over this betrayal. Yu arrives, trips Sho, and helps the injured Adachi. Sho mocks them, saying he's tired of this soap opera they're putting on - there's no way they actually care about one another. Adachi loses consciousness after, but wakes up in time to protect Yu from Hinokagutsuchi. Together, Yu and Adachi finish it off. After Sho is freed from Hinokagutsuchi, he tells Yu and Adachi about how he doesn't know anything besides combat. Yu offers to fight him as a way of bonding with one another. Adachi remarks there must be no cure for stupidity, but throws Sho his other katana and sits on the sidelines to watch. After the P-1 Climax is over, Adachi gets a visit from Dojima in jail.

Development
- Adachi was originally designed in a very conspicuous manner because he was supposed to be a red herring. He was redesigned to his current design after his role in the story changed. [12] Before Adachi was redesigned and rewritten, the plot had Namatame as a well-meaning but ill-informed culprit but there'd be a feeling that another more powerful being was still out there. Atlus added in the role that Adachi would eventually fulfill as a stepping stone between the two because they felt the story wasn't developed enough. [13] They half-jokingly thought about having this be Yukiko [14] and also considered Yosuke [15] before settling on Adachi. The reasoning for picking Adachi was that his character was originally a character who gave information about the police investigation to the main characters [16] and Hashino thought this character's irresponsibility with information made him a fitting antagonist because one of the game's themes was how information is obtained. [17] But Hashino also felt it necessary to change Adachi's character when fitting him into this new role because he thought he would otherwise stand out too much. [18]
- Soejima's concept art of Adachi includes a sketch of him wearing a yellow Mods coat. [19] Adachi never wears this in Persona 4, but he is seen wearing it in Persona 4 Golden The Animation, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, and Blazblue: Cross Tag Battle.
- Adachi's given name, Tohru, used to be Tamotsu. Due to the reactions to Adachi before the game came out and a famous Japanese spoiler from the 1983 ADV game The Portopia Serial Murder Case, he was renamed to Tohru. At the time, the audio had already been recorded for the game so Hashino had the sound team remove him introducing himself as Tamotsu. [20]
- The datamined unused English voice lines from Persona 4 that are available on The Cutting Room Floor reveal that Adachi is the person in the fog who appears on April 29th, June 4th, and October 5th. Even though the voiced lines were unused, the lines of text dialogue are still used in-game and the voice in the unused audio is identifiable as Adachi's English voice actor Johnny Yong Bosch. [6]
- For Adachi's appearance in Persona 4 Dancing All Night, Teppei Kobayashi asked for the many sides of Adachi to be represented through his dance, and furthermore use Adachi's own sadness to communicate that anyone could end up like him. The dance itself is based on the animation dance which gives off the impression of the dancer's body parts being moved one by one.[21]
Trivia
- Adachi's primary Japanese pronoun is 僕 (boku). There are a few lines where he switches to using 俺 (ore), such as when he says the nimono lady was just using him as a placeholder for her real son during his rank 6 Social Link event in P4G.
- Adachi's favorites foods are sushi (especially uni), beef dishes, and cabbage dishes. [1][2] One of the reasons why he took to Dojima is because Dojima took him to get sushi when they first met. [22]
- Adachi is noted as being terrible at paperwork and not very good at cleaning his room either. [1][2]
- Adachi is associated with cabbages due to his July NPC dialogue in Persona 4 where he says he bought cabbages at Junes. [23][24]
- Adachi's hobby is doing gun maintenance. [1][2] Atlus later clarified that he does maintenance on model guns at home since he can't take his service weapon home. [25]
- The lighter that Adachi takes out of his pocket during the Adachi Ending is one he keeps on him in case he needs to give Dojima a light. Adachi himself doesn't smoke. [26]
- Adachi is familiar with the Moonlight Bridge in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax because he used to be stationed near the Iwatodai city center and would take long drives back to HQ from crime scenes so he could drive over the bridge to imitate a character on a popular detective TV show. [27] The hosts of the Stalker Club identify the detective show being referenced as Bayside Shakedown while showing a clip of Adachi in his yellow Mods coat. The main character of Bayside Shakedown is also a detective in a red tie and a Mods coat who drives over the Rainbow Bridge, the real life model for the Moonlight Bridge.
- Adachi's alt costume in Persona 4 Dancing All Night and his color palette #9 in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax are both references to Katsuya Suou from Persona 2: Eternal Punishment.
- In December of 2014, Nico Nico Video announced there would be a Persona 4 Golden the Animation Cafe featuring Adachi to commemorate the release of volume 4 of the anime's BD/DVD.

Notes
- ↑ Adachi's profile in the Persona Club P4 book[1] as well as Adachi's Persona 4 Arena Ultimax profile[2] put his height at 176cm. In the height chart from the setting materials for Persona 4 The Golden Animation, his height is 173cm.[3]
- ↑ Upon learning of his true nature in Persona 4 Golden, the Jester arcana is revealed to be the Hunger arcana.
- ↑ In the Japanese version of Persona 4, Naoto's dialogue is: "Even the victims who survived and were never released to the public are written here. [...] The last date is today's... 'I managed to put her (Nanako) into the TV.'" In the English localization of Persona 4, Naoto's dialogue is: "Even the victims who survived and were never released to the public are written here. [...] The last date is today's... 'I managed to take her to safety.'". When Adachi says "put in", Naoto is reminded of the aforementioned conversation from November because "put in" was written in Namatame's diary. The English makes this unclear because Namatame's diary entry is different.
- ↑ In the Japanese version of P4G, Adachi makes fun of the protagonist by using an infantile word for sleeping, in line with how he uses age when talking down to the Investigation Team. In the English localization, the line was changed to Adachi asking how the protagonist could let a bitch like Izanami bring him down. In P4AU, Adachi references this line on his victory screen versus Sho. This callback is lost in the English as it was localized differently in P4AU than it was in P4G.
- ↑ At Atlus's Persona 25th Anniversary Exhibit, the storyboards and stage direction for the scene called it the 足立エンディング (Adachi Ending).
- ↑ After burning the letter, Adachi calls the protagonist his 共犯者 (kyouhansha). This is often translated as accomplice and is where the term Accomplice Ending comes from. In the English localization of the game, this word was localized as partner. Notably, this is the same word that Yosuke calls the protagonist in the English localization of the game as well. However, Yosuke's usage of partner in the English localization comes from the Japanese word 相棒 (aibou) which is a different word than Adachi's 共犯者 (kyouhansha). It was unintentional in the original Japanese script that Adachi remind the player of Yosuke. In the movie viewer, the clip of Adachi in the fog is once again labeled 共犯者 (kyouhansha) in Japanese, but in English it's titled Conspirator instead of either Accomplice or Partner.
- ↑ In the English localization, Adachi says "the prosecution's case finally rested" which gives off the impression that he's already on trial and the prosecution has finished presenting its evidence against him. This does not make sense with itself as the English localization also has him saying "Going to court", implying that he isn't already on trial.
- ↑ In the English localization, Adachi says "maximum penalty under law".
- ↑ In Persona 4, Adachi says, "This world's gone straight to shit" after he throws Saki into the TV. The suspect on TV says the same line in Japanese, but it's translated differently in the official English localization of Persona 5.
