Races are referred to as Orders in the localization of ''Persona'' (PSP).
Races are referred to as '''Orders''' in the localization of the PlayStation Portable version of {{Link|Game|P1}}. In the {{Link|Game|RP}} manual, Species are referred to as '''Classes''', Races as '''Clans''',  and Types as '''Species'''.

In the Japanese PlayStation version of ''Megami Ibunroku Persona'', boss-exclusive Races have two sets of names between the battle and out-of-battle Analyze menus. In normal gameplay, bosses cannot be analyzed outside of battle and their secondary Race names cannot be seen. In the PlayStation Portable version of {{Link|Game|P1}} however, due to a developer oversight, bosses display their unused Race names in the battle Analyze menu instead of their intended names.

Boss-exclusive races have different names in the PlayStation Portable version; if these races are hacked onto a regular demon through game modification, the PSP names are also used in the PlayStation version for their spell cards and for the out-of-battle Analyze menu, though this cannot be seen in normal gameplay.

Races, also referred to as Kin,[a] Clans,Revelations: Persona
or Orders,Persona
are groupings of Demons in the Megami Tensei. Demons are grouped into certain Races based on their common characteristics or origins and may sometimes share similar affinities. For instance, the Fairy Race largely consists of Demons based on faerie folk or nature spirits and often have an affinity for magic skills. Races are predominately present in the Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei games, the Shin Megami Tensei series, the Majin Tensei series, the Devil Summoner series (except for the Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha games), the Devil Children series, and the Devil Survivor series. Races are sometimes divided into larger groups called Species[b]Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine
or Class.Persona

Races have mechanical equivalents in some other series. In the Persona series, Personas and Shadows are grouped into Arcana. In Last Bible and Last Bible Special, Beasts are sorted into Groups which work similarly to Races, but incorporates elements of Personality. In the Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha sub-series of games, Demons are grouped into a separate but similar grouping called Orders. In Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE, Mirages are sorted into Classes.

Mechanics

This section is a stub. You can help Megami Tensei Wiki by expanding it.
Reason: Summary of Race's association with level scaling and general fleshing out of information.

Races are closely tied with the Demon Fusion mechanic, in which fusing two Demons of different Races can result in an entirely different Demon. In some Megami Tensei games, fusing two Demons of the same Race produces a Demon in the Element Race, which itself can be fused with another Demon to result in a higher- or lower-leveled Demon of the same Race.

In games with Alignments, Demon Races are also associated with a particular Alignment that, in most cases, its members all share. This tends to determine which Demons the protagonist can or cannot recruit through Negotiation.

Note that Alignment on the Law-Chaos axis is internally set per Demon and not per Race. However, all playable Demons of the same Race will have the same Alignment (though how extreme their Alignment is can vary), with the exception of Crusader in the Super CD-ROM² version. Tendency on the Light-Dark axis is set per Race.

Shin Megami Tensei if...

Note that Alignment on the Law-Chaos axis is internally set per Demon and not per Race. However, all playable Demons of the same Race will have the same Alignment (though how extreme their Alignment is can vary). Tendency on the Light-Dark axis is set per Race.

The Species table was left unchanged from Shin Megami Tensei II, including the length of the table, so Dog, Vermin, and Deity Emperor do not have any Species assigned.[e]

Megami Ibunroku Persona

Races are referred to as Orders in the localization of the PlayStation Portable version of Persona. In the Revelations: Persona manual, Species are referred to as Classes, Races as Clans, and Types as Species.

In the Japanese PlayStation version of Megami Ibunroku Persona, boss-exclusive Races have two sets of names between the battle and out-of-battle Analyze menus. In normal gameplay, bosses cannot be analyzed outside of battle and their secondary Race names cannot be seen. In the PlayStation Portable version of Persona however, due to a developer oversight, bosses display their unused Race names in the battle Analyze menu instead of their intended names.

Notes

  1. Kin is derived from Kinspeak from the updated localization of Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster, a trait which allows ally Demons to urge opposing Demons to accept a deal and has an increased likelihood if both Demons share the same Race.
  2. Japanese: 大種族Great race, Hepburn Dai shuzoku
  3. Presumably assigned God as a placeholder; God has an ID of 0.
  4. Species is listed as Fiend (魔人) in A-Mode DDS of the GBA version.
  5. All standard (i.e. not boss-exclusive) Races and the Godly Race from Shin Megami Tensei II remain in the data as unused content and have their slots assigned Species. Ranger and Divine General are replaced by Teacher and Modified Teacher.
  6. Occupies the same slot as Divine General from Shin Megami Tensei II, and the Species was left unchanged.
  7. Removed in the PlayStation Portable version; "demons" previously assigned as Human (Mysterious Man and the unused Kumiko) are now Zoma.
  8. Known as Reaper in the PSP version.
  9. Known as Tyrant in the PSP version.
  10. Known as Deity in the PSP version.
  11. Lit. "flying deva"; this comes from the Chinese 飛天 fēitiān, which as a noun is a term for apsaras.
