Hosoi is class 2-2's contemporary Japanese teacher. He first teaches on April 20th. He enjoys life in Inaba and does not see why anyone would want to go to the more urban areas.[2] As the events of the murder unfold, he talks about how lively Inaba has been this year.[3] Throughout the school year, he quizzes his students about language and literature and calls them by nicknames. He is a fan of the "Bullied Teacher" book series, and in May[4] and November,[5] students ask him if he has read the latest volume and saw him buying it at Yomenaido Bookstore. Despite how he feels about the countryside, he starts to like the fog after it covers Inaba as it means he does not have to make eye contact with people.[6]
Trivia
- In July, someone in class asks Hosoi a question about a kanji in the book they are reading. In the Japanese version, the person asking is a female student.[7] In the English version, instead of "Female student" for the speaker, it says "Li'l Hosoi",[8] giving the impression that Hosoi is doing ventriloquism with his hand puppet.
