Origin

According to Saint Patrick's Confessio, Patrick had a vision of a man named Victoricus who gave many letters from Ireland to Patrick. As Patrick read one of the letters, he heard many voices speaking as one telling him to go back to Ireland.

This would be embellished in later hagiography. For instance, in Jocelin of Furness's account of the life of Patrick, an angel called Victor appeared to Patrick and told him where to find gold to buy his freedom, and where to find a ship that, due to divine intervention, would not sail until Patrick would arrive.
