Ame-no-Uzume
Ame-no-Uzume is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.
Profile
Origin
Ame-no-Uzume, also known as Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto, is a kami in Japanese mythology associated with dawn, mirth, and ritual performance. She appears in the Kojiki (712 CE) and Nihon Shoki (720 CE) as a servant of the sun goddess Amaterasu.
She is best known for her role in the myth of the Heavenly Rock Cave (Ama-no-Iwato). After Amaterasu hides herself inside the cave following the actions of her brother Susano-o, the world is plunged into darkness. Ame-no-Uzume devises a plan to lure her out by performing a lewd and comedic dance, causing the assembled deities to laugh. Curious, Amaterasu emerges from the cave, allowing light to return to the world.
This mythological event is traditionally regarded as the origin of kagura, a form of Shinto ritual dance, and establishes Ame-no-Uzume as a deity associated with performance and religious ceremony.
In another myth, she accompanies Ninigi, the grandson of Amaterasu and her designated successor, during his descent to earth and persuades the earthly deity Sarutahiko to allow passage; the two later marry and become progenitors of the Sarume clan.

Ame-no-Uzume was designed as part of a trio alongside Kikuri-Hime and Kushinada-Hime. According to Kazuma Kaneko, he views them as the Shin Megami Tensei series's version of The Powerpuff Girls. Due to this, each of them have features reminiscent of comic book characters. For Ame-no-Uzume, this detail is her circle motif, which was not based on any legend about her.[1] He has also claimed that the reason she carries a fan originates from the legend where she danced in front of Ama-no-Iwato.[2]

Trivia
- Ame-no-Uzume's design in Giten Megami Tensei: Tokyo Revelation was originally made for Amaterasu, but for unknown reasons this design was instead used for Ame-no-Uzume, as well as the spritework for Suseri-Hime and Kukuri-Hime.
Nomenclature
From the Japanese 天鈿女命 Ame-no-Uzume no Mikoto, meaning "Her Augustness, the Heavenly Uzu Woman". Alternately spelled as 天宇受売命. "Uzu" might have referred to the branches, leaves, and flowers worn as hair ornaments by shrine maidens.
