トラソルテオトルは古代アステカの女神で、肉欲と淫行を司ることから「堕落の女神」と呼ばれる。トラエルクァニという異名を持っているが、これは「排泄物を食す者」という意味である。この名は彼女が贖罪と浄化に関連する神であることを表したものだと言われている。こうした女神に仕える聖なる女達はシワテテオ（いとも高貴な母）、あるいはシワピピルティン（女王）と呼ばれており、後世ではこうした女神に仕える存在は、出産で死んだ女性の幽霊であるとされた。

Tlazolteotl is an ancient Aztec goddess, and she presides over lust and harlotry, hence she is called the "goddess of depravity". She is also known by the other name Tlaelquani, meaning "she who eats excretions". This name is said to illustrate her existence as a deity associated with redemption and purification. The sacred women who served such a goddess were called Cihuateteo (most exalted mothers) or Cihuapipiltin (queens), and the beings who served such a goddess were believed by later generations to be the ghosts of women who died giving birth.
