Prometheus comes from Greek mythology, being one of the Titans that ruled the earth before the rise of the Olympians. His name is believed to mean "Forethought", which is a mirror to his brother Epimetheus, whose name means "Afterthought." The earliest account of Prometheus comes from the poet Hesiod, who recounts the tale of Prometheus tricking Zeus into choosing nourishless bones covered in appealing meat fat as a sacrifice over an unappealing ox's stomach filled with a selection of beef, thus setting the precedent for sacrifices to the gods. In this version of the myth humanity already had access to fire which Zeus revoked in rage which then prompted Prometheus to return fire to humanity. As punishment for this defiance, Zeus had Prometheus chained and forced to endure having his liver eaten by an eagle every day, as his immortality meant it would restore itself. In further retaliation for Prometheus' actions, Zeus sent Pandora to sow chaos among humanity.

A later account by Aeschylus, famous for his tragedies, expands on Prometheus by explaining that Prometheus sided with the Olympians during the Titanomachy and aided Zeus in achieving victory, making Zeus' actions against Prometheus a harsh betrayal. Both humanity's access to fire and Prometheus' initial trickery of Zeus are omitted by Aeschylus, instead making Prometheus critical to the education and civilisation of humanity. Eventually Prometheus was freed by Heracles.

In some versions of the story, Prometheus is also stated to be the creator of mankind, having molded the first humans from clay.
