Pales is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.
Profile
Origin
Pales is the Roman patron deity of shepherds whose temple was consecrated on July 7, 267 BC. While usually considered female in classical sources, some ancient texts mention Pales as a male god; this, along with two attestations of a dative plural Palibus, has led some scholars to suggest there were two gods named Pales, one male and one female. The festival Parilia (also known as Palilia)[a] was held on April 21 in Pales' honor.[1]
Pales' Megami Tensei official profiles are derived from false information found in The Woman's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets by Barbara Walker, which is included in the Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Akuma Zensho bibliography.
Design
Pales' donkey design is based on Walker's book falsely claiming that Pales was an ass-god.

Translation: Place of origin: Libya
A deity with a donkey's head who was worshiped in a wide region, from North Africa to the Middle East and Rome.
In the ancient world, the donkey's head of Pales was widely worshiped as a symbol of fertility. Their temple on Palatine Hill in Rome is well known, and is even the etymology of the English "palace".
In the aforementioned region, the donkey is a symbol of ill omen. It is a being considered to be the evil Egyptian god Set, and Satan in Christianity.

Translation: A fertility deity worshiped widely from North Africa to Europe. Thought to have a donkey's head.
Place of origin: Libya A deity with a donkey's head worshiped throughout Europe, thought to be a fertility deity with two sexes. According to one theory, they are said to have a head shaped like a phallus, like the evil Egyptian god Set or the Greek shepherd god Pan. The donkey's head was also considered a symbol of one who carries a heavy burden, and the god was said to symbolize paupers. Pales was sometimes considered an inauspicious deity, with these characteristics remaining in religions such as Christianity, and it is said that a deity with the head of a donkey is something which exists in a wide area.
